Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Hi everybody,

I have a plotter which is not plotting anything today.

I've done the things I always do when this happens (cleared the queue, turned the plotter off for ten seconds, stopped and restarted the print scheduler) but today (Friday 13th!) these things haven't worked.

The only possible clue I can see is in the output from lpstat -t: the plotter shows
"This Ethernet card NOT SELECTED". The plotter above shows card selected.

I can ping the ethernet card. Any ideas?

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Hi Mark,

Must be date related... Is your plotter connected to a jetadmin box. If so you can telnet to the device and use / to get a config overview. may be something has changed on the jetadmin box. ( resets to 192.0.0.192 if i am correct.)

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Thanks Gideon.

No, it's not on a jetadmin card - but it was useful that you suggested that! When I looked at the ethernet port I saw that it was flashing red.

I've passed the fault to our resident network expert for now. I'll report back when he's finished (either to ask for more help or to confirm that all is now well).

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Hi everybody.

The network people report that the network isn't the problem.

I can't telnet to the plotter - does anyone know if I should be able to?

Any more ideas welcome.

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Mark,

It sounds like you have to reconfigure the plotter and/or ethernet card.
Does it have multiple input sources? Did you touch a switch somewhere?
Is it an HP plotter? You are aware of the fora (forums?) on 'printers' (a plotter is a printer?).

Interesting how a message from the plotter ('This Ethernet card NOT SELECTED') shows up in the lpstat output. It is a message from the plotter, isn't it?

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Hi Jeroen.

Yes, I suspect I have to reconfigure something somewhere, but don't know what or how. I definitely haven't touched a switch that would explain the sudden fault - I'm on a different floor from the plotter and receive a phone call when it has a problem. It has multiple inputs, but we are only using the ethernet port.

The message in lpstat - I had assumed it came from the server, but now you've got me wondering. Does anyone know?

It isn't an HP plotter - it's a Calcomp DrawingMaster. I wasn't aware of any printer fora - are they HP only?

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Mark,

I meant the HP forums, I don't know about Calcomp.
How did you switch the plotter off for 30 seconds without touching it ;-) ?

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

OK, I'll rephrase it - I didn't touch a switch BEFORE the fault!

I've tried a few more things with the assistance of HP at the other end of the phone, and it's beginning to look like an application fault - I can plot to it from the command line.

Thanks to everyone for their efforts.

Re: Ethernet card NOT SELECTED

Confirmed it was an application fault - it's working fine now.

Thanks again to everyone for their contributions.
