extend vg00 or create vg01?

Hello all

I am installing a new application on my system.
my disk configuration is as follow:

/dev/vg00/lvol1
... lvol2
... ...
... lvol9

for the new application i have to take new disk because there is not enough space left on the system.
now i need to know the advantage and disadvantage of the following suggestions:

1- make a new volume group and install the application on the new disk and the new vg01.

2- extend the vg00 and make a new lvol and install there.

in the first suggenstion i see a better aspeckt of the security.

in the second suggenstion is an easier backup and restore procedure possible.(which we need very often for our tests)

could you give me another point of views?

I recommend you create a new volume group and install your application there.

By keeping all non-OS filesets out of vg00 you make your life so much easier. There are less problems upgrading, and recovery from tape is also easier. In the event you need to recover or upgrade your OS, the other volume groups can usually be imported which dramatically reduces recovery time.

I try to keep vg00 as light as possible.

vg00 is generally left for the operating system.

It is commonly considered good system administration to create a seperate vg(s) for your other applications.

Create a new volume group. In my opinion, vg00 should be confined to the operating system filesystems. By isolating your application data in its own volume group you can manange it independently.

Hello,

Yes, do keep your vg00 as basic as possible. By doing so you can quickly recover or alter the vg00 configuration using HP's Ignite make_tape_recovery tool. This will leave your application in tact on the seperate disk and it is just a matter of running the vgimport command to bring the application back online.

Hi,

I'm in complete agreement: keep vg00 for the OS and create separate VGs for applications.

As Steven and Martin state, rebuilding a system is much easier and quicker if all you have to reload is vg00. vgimport of other VGs is done very quickly compared to reloading. Additionally, other VGs are not over-written when rebuilding vg00 (unless you reload on the wrong disk) so the data is never touched.

I agree with the others for the same reasons.
Also considder that the more disks you put in vg00, the more likely it is for one to fail and bring vg00 down. Mirroring the vg00 lvols is of course the answer and then you would not want some non-mirrored volumes in there.

What is the new application? and how big is it?

Normally as others has said vg00 is O.S. only type applications. If you are installing something like glance,ignite-ux I would extend vg00. If it is an application that will grow I would create a new vg01.

I like to, when at all possible, to keep my OS separate from my applications and data. THis keeps the system "CLEAN". I have my OS in vg00, Applications and third party software in vg01, and my datafiles/databases in other VG's. If you have the disks and sisk space, I say separate them.

Plus, when you do a make-tape_recovery, with the "-A" option, and VG00 is just the Operating System, then your recovery tape is "CLEAN". And you can backup your "OTHER" VG's using some other backup software.

Hello,

I suggest to make a new vg on the new drive and put the data of the new application there. If a disk fails, it's much easier to restore data if you have this configuration than if you have 1 VG on both disks.

It is a good idea to make a new VG and put your applications on it.

Normally vg00 is for OS realted applications, hence you can upgrade, migrate and recover your system without any hassle.
