Extending a physical volume?
I have a question about LVM on HP-UX.
For example, assume we have a VG with 1 PV which comes from a SAN
storage. What happens if we extend the size of that PV (LUN) from SAN disk
subsystem side? Can HP-UX handle this? I mean, is it possible to extend the
size of PV being used in a VG without data loss? If so, what should the
procedure be?
Thanks and regards
Thanks and regards

Re: Extending a physical volume?
HP-UX Cannot handle a dynamic resize of the lun / PV for a Volume Group.
Hope this helps.

Re: Extending a physical volume?
If there is only 1 PV then this cannot be done and it would result in data loss.

Re: Extending a physical volume?
Thanks for your time.
Is it possible to do that offline?

Re: Extending a physical volume?
Offline or Online, HP-UX Cannot handle that.
To do this, you need to backup all the data on that VG / PV. Drop the VG (since there is only one PV), Resize the lun and reinitialize it by creating a new VG / LV's and then doing the restore.
Dynamic resizing of a Lun is not supported on HP-UX / Offline or online.
Hope this helps.

Re: Extending a physical volume?
In other words - you still need to tear it down to rebuild it larger.

Re: Extending a physical volume?
Also if you add any disk of size which exceeds the max number of PEs possible in it, the rest of the space would be useless.
I would suggest as others did to backup the data, recreate and restore back.
Thanx.

Re: Extending a physical volume?
Happy New Year..
I follow with everybody... But Why you want to extend the LUN size??, Have you crossed the maximum LUN no. in your storage box?.
If not you can create one more LUN & do a vgextend & lvextend .
