Extending striped logical volume

I have an LV that was created with 47 stripes and now need to increase it. Does that mean that I have to add 47 disks?

In a word: YES

Since it was set up striped, when you extend LVM must be able extend across the same number of disks the LV was originally striped across.

Yes, that's that downside. See the manpages for 'lvextend'.
