extending /var and /opt ( previsous qestion extension)

What are the advantages and disadvantages for extending vg00 for following

1; by using disk to extending logical volume and volome group. do we need whole new disk to extend the volume?

2:To replace the new disk for boot disk using ignite backup procedure.

Re: extending /var and /opt ( previsous qestion extension)

Not having read your prior question.....

1) A disk can not be in two volume groups. If all your disks are full and you need more space for vg00 then you have to add a disk. That disk can only reside in one volume group at a time.

2) If you have an issue where you need to extend the root filesystem or other filesystem that requires contiguous space, the Ignite option is the way to go. I've Ignited my way out of several situations, where /var or / was not big enough.

The obvious disadvantage is if that tape isn't good you've got dep trouble.

Do you need a new disc? Check with SAM.

SAM -> Disks and file systems -> Volume Groups.

Look at the Mbytes available against vg00. If it is low or 0, yes you need a new disc. If it is high, you should be able to extend.

Re: extending /var and /opt ( previsous qestion extension)

Hi,

(1) If you have enought space on in the current volume group vg00 you can use lvextend command, otherwise you have to add additional disk (if you have additional space in the CPU cabinet where are the system disks) in the volume group and after that you can extend the /var and /opt, or you have to change the current system disk with bigger one.

(2) Yes you can do it this way:
1. Make recovery tape with -I option and including all vgroups which are on the disk(s) you have to replace.
2. To be sure make a copy of the tape to another tape.
3. shutdown the server
4. replace the disk(s)
5. Start the server and interupt the boot
6. Insert the tape
7. Put SEA command ang wait for possible boot devices
8. enter command
boot P?
? - is appropriet number of tape device
9. Answer N for IPL
10. Wait until it boots and the user interface is shown
11. Select HP-UX-inatallation
12. If you want to change the filesystem size check the advanced mode -> go to Filesystem tab

After all it will start installation on the system and it will reboot by the istallation proces.

Re: extending /var and /opt ( previsous qestion extension)

Boris has given very godd desc abt how to start. It is better to make use of the ignite recovery. However one disk canbe used only in single volume group.

make use of this before proceeding through ignite
