External storage attached to HDS/HP arrays - hpux device names
Hi all,
We have EMC disk arrays today and are thinking of replacing them with i.e HDS (NSC or USP).
We would then attach the EMC arrays as external storage and migrat the data into the HDS arrays instead.
What happens to my hpux disk device names when i do this. HDS says that the device names will stay the same, that when we attach EMC as external storage we can adopt the old device names into the new HDS array. OK, perhaps we can do this in the array, but then i need to connect the HDS array to a SAN switch which then will give me new device names on the hpux hosts. Right?
Thanks and regards,
Hampus Lind

Re: External storage attached to HDS/HP arrays - hpux device names
The device file names have no correlation to the SAN switch other than the three octets of the H/W path denoting the SAN address space may change.
It is totally upto the OS to assign the controller numbers i.e. c# for the device files. The t# and d# will be assigned on how HP-UX scans the LUNs on the HDS array.
Connecting to a SAN switch may change the Domain/Area/Port fields of the SAN address space (the Port field will remain the same if it's fabric attached and the array is configured to use volume set addressing). So the device files may or may not change.
~hope it helps
