External tape drive

I want to add external tape drive to rp3440 machine, so that I can make use of gnite, and make_tape_recovery to my system.
It's my first time to add new hardware to this system, especially tape drive.
If some one have experince with this, I will appreciate any guidence and help.

Re: External tape drive

It is not good to do it online. But can be done.

check for correct scsi id and connect the device. (you may get scsi lbolt errors on the bus)

Once connected, do ioscan -fn and insf -ev

Now you should see the device.

Re: External tape drive

It complains about Ignite-UX version mismatch. What version you have installed your server(s)?

#swlist |grep -i ignite
http://www.docs.hp.com/en/IUX/faq.html

Re: External tape drive

The out put for
#swlist -l |grep ignite

is
B5725AA B.5.1.33 HP-UX Installation Utilities (Ignite-UX)
IUX-Recovery B.5.4.50 Ignite-UX network recovery tool subset
Ignite-UX-11-11 B.5.4.50 HP-UX Installation Utilities for Installing 11.11 Systems

Re: External tape drive

I see a version mismatch there, this may related to the error what you got, Try installing latest Ignite-UX
http://h20293.www2.hp.com/cgi-bin/swdepot_parser.cgi/cgi/try.pl?productNumber=IGNITEUXB&date=

or, if you have CD or DVD, try installing B.5.4.50.

Re: External tape drive

You do have a version mismatch. Remove and re-install latest version.

Re: External tape drive

Hi Arun

I have corrected the ignite verison error as per your advice, but I'm geting this error:
ERROR: Failed to open tape device /dev/rmt/0mn:No such device or address
(errno = 6).
ERROR: Check tape device failed.

And for ioscan -funCtape I'm getting this:
ERROR: Failed to open tape device /dev/rmt/0mn:No such device or address
(errno = 6).
ERROR: Check tape device failed.

seems that the tape is connected okay, but as ignite always go for defualt path for tape drive, from where to correct this.

For you information I have tape library but it's not directly attached to my server.

Pls extend your help

Thanks

Re: External tape drive

It is possible your SCSI tape drivers are not loaded -- which means you'll need to enable them and reboot the system.

Do an "lsdev|grep -i tape"

If it is not enabled, then go to SAM, kernel config, drivers and enable it...

After reboot.

Check if you have entries in /dev/rmt/*.
If youhave an rmt/0*, do a :

mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn stat

If it sees your tape, your good to go with your ignite.

Re: External tape drive

Thanks, but still no sucess,

I have same error still.

out but for mt -f /dev/rmt/0mn
on tape open: No such device or address

lsdev |grep -i tape is:
05 -1 stape tape
212 -1 tape0 tape

in /dev/rmt I have the following:
0m 2mb 4mn c4t0d1BESTnb c7t0d2BEST
0mb 2mn 4mnb c4t0d2BEST c7t0d2BESTb
0mn 2mnb c3t3d0BEST c4t0d2BESTb c7t0d2BESTn
0mnb 3m c3t3d0BESTb c4t0d2BESTn c7t0d2BESTnb
1m 3mb c3t3d0BESTn c4t0d2BESTnb stape_config
1mb 3mn c3t3d0BESTnb c7t0d1BEST
1mn 3mnb c4t0d1BEST c7t0d1BESTb
1mnb 4m c4t0d1BESTb c7t0d1BESTn
2m 4mb c4t0d1BESTn c7t0d1BESTnb
When I test mt -f /dev/rmt/2mn stat It show:
mt -f /dev/rmt/2mn stat
Drive: HP Ultrium 1-SCSI
Format:
Status: [0]
File: 0

Re: External tape drive

If your external tape drive is indeed an Ultrium - then use /dev/rmt/1m.

/opt/ignite/bin/make_tape_recovery -I -Av -a /dev/rmt/1mn

I am not sure though if the Ultrium (what generation?) is now supported by Ignite.

Before doing so, try if you can write to the tape device:

tar cvf /dev/rmt/1m /somefile_or_dir
