On HP Itanium server unix 11i, we are trying to connect USB DAT 72 external dat drive.
After issuing command inf -e

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive

Hi,

I'm quite sure a USB drive is not supported with HP-UX yet, check:

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/IPF/Detail/16-0030-0095.html

or

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/IPF/index.html

(check the OS section!)

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Shalom,

The log is meaningless.

HP-UX has become the most reliable OS partially by limiting the universe of hardware it will work with.

Attempting to work with off the shelf technology like this without checking the compatability with your system will almost always lead to the results you received.

http://partsurfer.hp.com

Try a supported drive next time.

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive

Before attaching device I have already checked compatibility of HP Storegeworks USB DAT drive on HP site.

HP integrity server rx3600 supports HP StorageWorks DAT 72 USB - Part No. HP C7438A.

After attaching device also detected in SAM -> Peripherials -> Tape

tape 0 0/0/2/0.1.16.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP C7438A

I have doubt on driver it had taken i.e. stape. Is this ok? stape is for scsi or it will support both scsi and usb.

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive

The server supports the drive - but only if the server is running windows or linux, see

http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/IPF/Detail/16-0030-0121.html#OS

Hope this helps!

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive

Operating system is not supported, hence we have to go with DAT72 SCSI External drive.

Thanks
