Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive
I'm quite sure a USB drive is not supported with HP-UX yet, check:
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/IPF/Detail/16-0030-0095.html
or
http://www.hp.com/products1/storage/compatibility/tapebackup/IPF/index.html
(check the OS section!)
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive
The log is meaningless.
HP-UX has become the most reliable OS partially by limiting the universe of hardware it will work with.
Attempting to work with off the shelf technology like this without checking the compatability with your system will almost always lead to the results you received.

Re: fbackup(3042) not in a valid device state with USB DAT drive
HP integrity server rx3600 supports HP StorageWorks DAT 72 USB - Part No. HP C7438A.
After attaching device also detected in SAM -> Peripherials -> Tape
tape 0 0/0/2/0.1.16.0.0 stape CLAIMED DEVICE HP C7438A
I have doubt on driver it had taken i.e. stape. Is this ok? stape is for scsi or it will support both scsi and usb.
