Hello,
I use fbackup from SAM to do my nightly backups on a DDS3 drive. I have a D-Box with 10.20. I am not sure if the data is compressed right now, can I find out if it is compressed? If not, is there a way to compress the data to hold more than the 12GB uncompressed data on a single tape? Do I need special device files etc ...??
What are the pros and cons of using compression if it can be done?
Thank you,
Sanjay.

Solution
By default the device files created by HP-UX are for best density available (i.e. hardware compression on). To verify your device files you can use SAM - Peripheral Devices - Tape Drives. Select tape drive, Actions - Show Device files.
Unless you are using a software compression program for backups, you are best using the hardware compression. Keep in mind though, depending on the files being backed up you may receive greater or less than 2:1 compression.
