fbackup error

Hi,

Our fbackup has been failing with recently with this error message:

fbackup(3045): WRITE ERROR while writing data record, at media record 96
fbackup(3102): attempting to make this volume salvagable
fbackup(3123): could not read the previous checkpoint record
fbackup(3105): writing 2 EOFs and rewinding the tape

Please advise!

Thanks,
Archana.

Re: fbackup error

Hi:

I'd clean the drive and replace the tape with a new one.

Re: fbackup error

The tape has been cleaned several times. Also, brand new tapes are being used for the backup.

Thanks again!

Re: fbackup error

Sounds like a bad tape, have you tried using a new one or cleaning the dat/dlt drive. If this fails then you could be looking at a faulty drive

Re: fbackup error

Hi:

If the drive has been well-cleaned and you are using new tapes, try writing with 'tar'. Also, how much work does 'fbackup' do before it fails? Using (v)erbose logging will help ascertain that.

Re: fbackup error

Sounds like you may have a faulty tape drive, especially since you've cleaned the drive and replaced the tape. You probably want to replace the drive.

Re: fbackup error

When you put in the cleaning tape, how long does it stay in the tape drive, shorter then one minute? If yes could be a Faulty tape drive.
It also can be a Firmware issue with the tape-drive.

Re: fbackup error

Thanks for your responses!

The time taken for the tape to fail usually varies, although most of the time it is soon after the tape has been put in. How can I tell if this is a firmware issue?

Thanks!

Re: fbackup error

I don't think it can be a firm issue. As the other forum members were suggesting to use "tar". Did you try that ?

Normally tar does its work silently use "tv" option to have good explanation of what is going on.

If you get the same write error's even with tar then it is time for you to put in a purchase order. :)

Hope this helps.

Re: fbackup error

Try backing up with another brand of tapes.

Just a thought.

Re: fbackup error

Hi
If this is a recent fault on an otherwise healthy backup routine and you are using new tapes on a cleaned drive then suspect the tape drive.

Options to test are using tar as previously stated or create another fbackup routine and watch is go through.

Re: fbackup error

If you have cleaned your heads and use new
tapes, you've either got a mechanical
problem or most likely a software problem.
Send a swlist output and we'll have a look.

Re: fbackup error

Hi,

Insert a Tape in the device and run
diskinfo -v /dev/
and then ask the HP guys to check you're firmware level for the drive.

Re: fbackup error

Hi,

We had the tape drive replaced on the weekend. Since then the error messages have stopped appearing. Thanks a lot.
