Fbackup Errors

Hi, my backups were going well until the last couple of weeks. They fail sporadically and these are the error messages I receive:

Full backup started on ###### : Tue May 29 22:08:37 EDT 2001 (Scheduled Backup)
{ fbackup -0 -u -g /etc/sam/br/graphVBAa02007 -I /var/sam/log/br_index.full -
c /etc/sam/br/fbackup_config -d /var/adm/fbackupfiles/dates -f /dev/rmt/c2t0d0BE
ST } 2>&1
Full backup failed on ###### : Tue May 29 22:09:57 EDT 2001 .
Exit code = 2

Full backup failed on ##### : Tue May 29 22:09:55 EDT 2001 .
For more information, see the log file /var/sam/log/br_log.

Output from fbackup:

br_backup: Invoking fbackup. See /var/sam/log/br_log for details.
fbackup(1004): session begins on Tue May 29 22:08:38 2001
fbackup(3047): could not open output file /dev/rmt/c2t0d0BEST
fbackup(3019): would you like to enter a new output file?
fbackup(3004): writer aborting
fbackup(1002): Backup did not complete : Reader or Writer process exit

I have seen this error before when the tape was not in the drive but the tape is there. I put it there myself. Has anybody ever had this problem? I don't think this is a bad tape issue because it happens with all different tapes. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Fbackup Errors

I would first clean the drive with a HP cleaning cartridge then retry the fbackup.

Hope this helps.

Re: Fbackup Errors

Hi Rob,

Ok,I agree with Nancy, but I would like to say that errorcode 2 means that the backup tried to accomplish her task but there are error conditions which prevent the session from completing.

Re: Fbackup Errors

Hi Rob,
fbackup(3047): could not open output file /dev/rmt/c2t0d0BEST
Means fbackup is unable to use tape drive.
I have same problem on two of our system, so I will say use mt command before starting backup
mt -t /dev/rmt/c2t0d0BEST rew
Then try to run fbackup from command line rather then from script or cron for testing. Use -v options for verbose mode.
