fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

I posted a question yesterday on backup to TAPE on a NON HP(sun server) . Here is the error iam getting :

(mercury root):/> fbackup -0v -i /tmp -f desktop.hdc.bio-rad.com:/dev/rmt/1cbn
fbackup(1004): session begins on Thu Oct 11 11:11:16 2001
fbackup(3004): writer aborting
fbackup(1002): Backup did not complete : Reader or Writer process exit

I already have .rhost setup for them . I tested doing to a remote HP tape drive and it worked just fine. Also test "tar" on a remote SUN server and it works fine - so tape media is ok .

My objective is to backup 55 gig of data in 4 hrs. time . Any suggestions or alternatives ?

thanx in advance

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

Deepak,

Did you try doing a remote tar from the HP system to SUN system?

HP_system#remsh sun_system tar cvf /dev/rmt/1cbn /etc/passwd

If it doesn't work, then you need to fix the 'remsh' problem.

If this works, then fbackup doesn't support tape drives on non-HP systems. I don't know this for sure as I never tried. The above test can determine this.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

One other alternative is to NFS mount your HP directories on the SUN system and do a cpio.

Go to the NFS mounted directory and do

find . -cpio /dev/rmt/device_file.

I assume your tape drive supports 55Gigs of data.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

Hi Deepak:

As I said yesterday, fbackup will not work when attempting to access remote devices on non-HP boxes. Your SUN box doesn't know how to respond to the RPC request.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

I know NFS would be my last option . I have around 10 mount points of 4-5 gig each and that means i have to mount them all - or one by one . We have DLT 7000 and it should support 55 gig since we are using the compressed device . Something wrong on the configuration parameter of fbackup ?

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

fbackup is HP only, so there is no fbackup on the SUN system.
You will have to look at one of the other suggested methods to do this.

I think answer is NO . I will find some alternative to bail out.

thanx everybody for quick suggestions.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

Hello Deepak,

I don't know if this will work but you may want to try dump / rdump. Several years back I was able to use dump from an AIX machine to a Sun (ufsdump). Sorry I don't have the specifics nor can I test it now but I have a feeling it will work.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

Have you checked the rmt(1M) stuff which I posted in the other thread? http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,11866,0xa507c7af36b7d5118ff10090279cd0f9,00.html

I think that I have to partly disagree with Melvyn (see the other thread as to why).

I think the rdump reference is a good one! I think it is likely that the Sun system has dump and rdump. If so, first try dump on the Sun system in order to get used to it and to make sure it works. Next do a rdump from the Sun system to itself. When that works, do a rdump from HP to Sun. When that works, it is likely that fbackup from HP to tape on Sun also works, because both rdump and fbackup use rmt(1M) on the remote side.

Re: fbackup to remote non-hp tape drive

Suggested alternative;

use tar and dd to backup to your remote non HP drive, it works fine;

eg. from your HP server;

tar cvf - | dd bs=64k | remsh -l dd of=/dev/rmt/0m

Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...
