fbackup to remote tape on Solaris

Hi,

I'm trying to use fbackup from my Solaris machine to the HP machine, and to do the backup to the tape on the Solaris machine. I issue the following command from my Solaris machine:

rsh "fbackup -0 -u -v -g graphfile -f :/dev/rmt/0"

The error I get is "writer aborting".

I have tested rsh with another command such as mkdir or date with success. My question then is, if fbackup to a remote tape supported ONLY for HP machines? If fbackup CANNOT write to a remote tape that is not on an HP, can it write instead to a FILE on the remote machine?? I have also tested the latter scenario but no luck :(.

What would be your suggestion for performing a backup of data on the HP machine to another remote machine that is not an HP (specifically, its a Solaris.)

Pls help!!!

Re: fbackup to remote tape on Solaris

I don't think your fbackup will work even if the slave host is an HP machine as well. Because for using remote tape drive for backup, the slave host (Solaris) must have a .rhosts entry for the root user from the master host (HP).

Try adding the rhosts entry and see how it goes.

Re: fbackup to remote tape on Solaris

Hi,

fbackup may not work , please try with tar
- setup $HOME/.rhosts

find ... | tar cvf - | remsh "dd of=/dev/rmt/... bs=

regards,
enjoy any little thing in my life

Thanks to all who replied. I decided to use tar and dd instead.
