Re: fbackup
what error message do you get...what's the return code from your backup command.
Pls try different commands like cpio or dd.
Can you try some "mt" commands??? What does this say. Is the driver correctly installed for the device.Pls give us also information what "ioscan -fnCtape" says.

Re: fbackup
the error message gor backup is
fbackup(3011): WRITE ERROR while writing a checkpoint EOF, at media record 992
fbackup(3102): attempting to make this volume salvagable
fbackup(3105): writing 2 EOFs and rewinding the tape
fbackup(3106): please mount a good tape
fbackup(3316): enter '^[yY]' when volume 1 is ready on /dev/rmt/c2t3d0BEST,
or '^[nN]' to discontinue:
with tar is not got any error message just that the tape's finished but that's impossible since the test was made with a very small file
thanks

Re: fbackup
Have they installed the drivers in 11?
Does ioscan -fnC tape show the device?

Re: fbackup
the worst thing would be that you have a bad tape drive.
But at first try following:
# replace the used tapes with new ones
# clean the drive with a cleaning tape
# attach the drive to another HP machine using HP-UX 11i
Also look if the SCSI bus is terminated correctly.
Hope this helps.
