Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

At the risk of simply repeating the same information already given, great site BUT --

The search on this site really stinks. If you do a search for 'NNM 6.x' under the 'network and systems management' section you get a huge page full of info on 'HP-UX Support Matrix Information to the Workstation Platform'. I'm sure that there is a reason for that somewhere, but I have yet to understand it. Needless to say, it doesn't meet my needs.

I could provide many other examples, but why repeat what has been said many times before?

Bottom line seems to be what has been said and said many times already - great site with wonderful content, but not the most user friendly one I have seen so far unless you just happen to eat, drink, and sleep search engine strings.

Some of us do not.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

I agree with most.
Great content but the search needs to be worked out.

Though, if you compare to docs.sun.com ( which I have to use a lot too ) you deserve A+.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Hi Hemanth,

Compliments on the site. The search issue is covered i suppose...

Can it be possible to also search techical documents that are available on the itrc web site that comes available if you log in.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

The only problem I see with the docs site is that it does not apply to all documents for all products. Case in point where you want to look for 'glance' stuff, you end up having to look at managementsoftware.hp.com or openview.hp.com for other products, omniback and the like. Other than that not too bad, but I agree the search engine is fairly useless, but once inside the correct document, then ok

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Hi,

the only one blame is that some searches point to page don't available anymore. And there are not alternative links.
Then I agree with Bill and Damien.

Anyway docs.hp.com is a very important and useful database for HP Technical Documentation.

There should be an archive for all old manuals: software, hardware, operating system versions....

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

I was unable to find manuals for openmail on the site but thanks to the forum members i was pointed in the right direction very quickly. For me this proves its hard to find what you want but when you do its good.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

I'd like to know why, when you search for a generic subject like VPARS or Ignite or SSH, don't the manuals show up in the search listing? To my way of thinking, they should show up first. Instead I'm face with hundreds of entries that have only obscure references to the searched-for topic and no manuals at all. The only way I've been able to find a manual through the search function is to enter the exact entire name (if I'm lucky enough to know the exact name, that is).

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Overall the documentation site is good. But there are so many other documentation websites available in the internet.

1. Search is having some issues, i hope. It is not helpful in finding the correct document.

2. The documentation sites need to be improved for more easy browsing. I need something like great "Sun System Handbook" where we can use it for all the sun hardware systems. I hope there is nothing like this.

3. Also, some of the documentation is not enough with information. Extra care should be taken for writing hardware documentation.

Thanks

Hi there.
These docs seem to have helped some people including myself.
Useful idea and a good pool.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

UPS documentation is lacking.

Add a link to the Openview site as well.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

First (and so far, only) visit was VERY unsatisfactory.

HTML docs should have a "handle" so the entire document can be pulled down in ONE fetch, in addition to individual chapters, and major topical sub-sections.

Found a lot of out of date info, making me think this was an archive, not current data.

Search eng.., no, search faci...., no, lookup "line" is really an embarrasment (as is my spelling! - oh but for a spell checker here!)

Realize Windows OS materials not often as HP pubs, but lack of Compaq materials being merged is poor. At least VMS is included!

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

The biggest problem I've had with it is that there is no good documentation on the search feature and there is no advanced searching (ANDs exclude) or if there is , its not well documented.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Do I use it...yes. Do I like it....no.

I get a headache everytime I try to find something there to be honest...(guess it's just the blonde in me..).

I must fully agree with Bill Hassell's comment above. Those white papers, and easy access to them, are probably the optimum example of the best info in the hardest (albeit if at all) places to find. What a pity.

Information that isn't easy to get to...isn't helpful. Were it not for the 800-366-6300 and H-E-L-P, where is that document at.....

Kindest Regards,
Rita

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Being rather new at HP-UX system admin, I have found it very illuminating to read all the posts to this thread. I've made several forays into the site looking for information and have frequently not found documents relevant to my needs. I thought it was just me, or perhaps there *was* no relevant documentation. Now I'm wondering if the search engine and site organization were at least partly at fault. On the other hand I've found great stuff just by browsing around rather aimlessly, and then printed or bookmarked the items for future use.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Hi,
Its a great site for documentation BUT so confusing when you are in a urgent need for something... As I try to stay ZEN the good thing about it is falling on docs you were not specially looking for (and you wouldnt read otherwise ) but seem interresting so you have a look, then you read... and you realize what a good day it has been - You have again learned something... But forgotten what you were after in the first place...

Good luck

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Hi,
This is simply great and i cannot express the greatness of this site with words.

This will provide any System Administrator or any aspiring HP Learner with good required stuff.

KEEP IT ALL UP ! CHEERS !

I guess some people are expecting spoon feeding from this site.
I am sorry if it hurts.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

On a scale of 1 to 10 -- you get 10!

Thank you for putting all those content and knowledgebase on there. Truly a Great Levelling tool.. I used to remember manuals are too expensive and in most IT shops are closely guarded documents. With the advent of the Internet and vendors posting practically all their manuals and technical documentation on line, gone are the 'greedy techies" who used to restict access to those manuals.

I would certainly hope in the future documentation will not just be printed text but rather actual live video of how things are done --ie. mpeg/avi files with voice/graphic annotations.

In my old IT Shop, I implemented all our documentation as Lotus SmartCam files - so my staff practically up to speed with certain IT tasks in virtually no time.. Saves a ton on training too!

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Of course very good!
But, only personal idea , I'd like more internal HP documents put to docs.hp.com!
Some other companies as IBM, MS, they always put all valuable documents to there website, no keep! But I found HP not ...

Hi Hemanth,

The documentation is very very useful but it very difficult to find the correct information we need.

It contains alot of useful info but suggest add an extra search engine which can perform baisc search and advanced search.

Re: Feedback on HP Documentation Website

Hi Hemanth,

An ocean full of information. And I feel I have got whatever i have looked for from the site.

As everyone has pointed the search engine is not up to the mark. The way the docs are oriented needs also a change.
