We can get the system to boot by unplugging the fiber connections, but then if we plug the fibers back in and run an ioscan, it hangs until we yank the fibers again. It always seems to hang at about the same point, when it reaches an ext_bus entry:
ext_bus 21 0/0/8/0/0.97.100.255.1 fcpdev NO_HW INTERFACE FCP Device Interface
target 28 0/0/8/0/0.97.100.255.1.3 tgt NO_HW DEVICE
ctl 66 0/0/8/0/0.97.100.255.1.3.0 sctl NO_HW DEVICE ADIC Scalar i2000
It sees all the tape drives up to that point with no problems, including the robot and other stuff, but it hangs on whatever that ext_bus thing is. I also notice that the HW address for it is way higher; where it says 255, nothing else has been above 19.
I've seen some stuff on the forums with links to documents that are no longer available from HP. Anybody have some up-to-date info on this?
Thank you!!!

Re: Fiber connection causes kernel panic on boot, hung ioscans
The system "panic" is occuring on account of the I/O hardware ( at FC HBA ) probe timeout as would as I/O system hang.
The same I/O hang is ocuring when 'ioscan" is ran.
To know the cause ,I would check for
1. FCMS driver version ( HPUX???)
2. FC HBA card , driver , patches
3. Connection from FC HBA port to the ADIC library
4. SAN switch involved , firmware version, zoning
5. Device addressing used in ADIC Library

Re: Fiber connection causes kernel panic on boot, hung ioscans
Did you install the devicefiles.
If you didn't install the device files ioscan wil hang and with a reboot it will go in a panic because there is hardware he can't place or activate.
try using insf -e to install the devicefiles.
and reun ioscan.

Solutionhad to install FC patches : PHSS_28509 and PHKL_27751.
This allowed me to boot , however did not solve the issue with the ext_bus.
For that i had to use the ioinit command after changing the zoning of my SAN.
Be carefull with this procedure, for it is quite complex....

Re: Fiber connection causes kernel panic on boot, hung ioscans
What is the OS revision, did u install latest HW Enable patch Bundle in the system, if not load it.
It is better to load the latest HW Enable patch Bundle rather than going for indiviudal patches, to fix Hardware issues.
Just to fix this issue, you can load FC mass storage driver patch and it's Kernal dependancy patches, as mentioned in the earliest reply.
Regards,
Sunil
