File Busy Error

When changing a password for account the following occurs

Temporary file busy; try again later for /etc/ptmp

Any suggestion on resolving without rebooting machine ?

Hi,

try to find out what proces is keeping this file busy. See man fuser for syntax.

Hi,

It might be to simple, but are you editing the password file the same time with vipw ?

Is the system crashed before this happens ?
If yes remove the /etc/ptmp file !
