Please help explaining this odd files sizing..!!
Server: 9000/800/rp7420
OS: HP-UX 11.11
OS mode: 64 bit
$ ls -l shows the file size(TEMP_03.dbf) in bytes as:
-rw-r----- 1 oraprod dba 4194312192 Sep 9 11:38 TEMP_01.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oraprod dba 4194312192 Sep 9 11:38 TEMP_02.dbf
-rw-r----- 1 oraprod dba 4194312192 Aug 31 08:32 TEMP_03.dbf
$ ls -s shows the file size(TEMP_03.dbf) in 512 byte block as:
8189632 TEMP_01.dbf
8189232 TEMP_02.dbf
144 TEMP_03.dbf
The file is one of oracle temp tablespace data files.
most of the other OS commands like bdf, du, df are follows the "ls -s" sizing. only the backup utility(data protect) is with "ls -l" sizing.

Re: file size
ls -s if you check the man page lists size in BLOCKS, not bytes.
Blocks contain more than one byte.

SolutionYes I think he knows this - it is in fact in 512 byte blocks - 512 * 8189632 = ~4194312192
Ali,
Oracle temporary files are sparse files - that means that when created they are most just zeros (null), so there's no point in filling the disk with them. As the file is used, the size reported by "ls -s" will increase, although its interesting that this temporary file has a different access time from the others - I wonder if your DBAs assigned it and then later dropped it?
If you have a support contract associated with your ITRC account you can learn more about sparse files here:

Re: file size
Duncan can not, that is asking him to violate the law in front of the district attorney.
You could try asking the Response Center to make you a copy?

Re: file size
If you have a support contract attached to this server, find the serial number of the server and add this to your ITRC account.
go to;
» my profile
» link a warranty to your user ID
