That's what I did. I've added it's own 10 mb line in the hosts table, and since nsswitch is 'files dns' there are indeed no more dns requests. Still did not find the process though ...

OK, set it up in hosts as an alias in the hosts file to another normally uninvolved system & then see what it starts requesting/sending/inquiring to that other system.
This is becoming real detective work here.
