Firmware Upgrade on HPUX 11.0 for DLT VS80

I have installed a new DLT VS80 external tape drive on the HP9000. 'sam' or ioscan cannot see the tape drive.

I have downloaded the firmware and LLT software. I have run the hp_llt install script but with no success. How do I upgrade my firmware for the DLT and get it recognised by HPUX 11.0?

try running "insf -e"

is the stape driver status in the kernel "in" or "out"

launch sam
go to kernel configuration
drill down to drivers
scroll down till you find stape driver
make sure the driver status is "IN" in both columns. If not, from the Actions menu, change the status. Beware: This will call for a reboot.

Hi Anthony

1. Make sure stape driver status in IN in kernel drivers menu.

2. Check whether you can see tape hardware before booting the server i.e. at IPL level.

3. Check for SCSI cable connection and SCSI address setting.

4. Firmaware upgrade is required for better functionality and should be planned after you see the drive in ioscan

Thanks for the reply to my query. However, I have everything set up as you suggested:

I can see the tape drive in the IPl at boot time but 'ioscan' does not pick up the tape. Kernel parameters at set up correctly and I am now at a loss as to what to do next.

I had understood that the firmware upgrade would ensure that HPUX would see the tape drive. During the 'sam' session on adding a tape drive "all tape related device drivers are currently configured" ... message is displayed.

Your urgent response will be greatly appreciated.

Further to my earlier response to you, I would like to ask how I can connect directly on the Internet from HPUX 11.0 so that I can download the firmware upgrade directly onto the server. The HP server is connected on the same LAN as the Internet. I would like to set up an internet browser on HPUX.

I am not sure if this will resolve my problem. Kindly advise.

hi,

I doubt it will be the firmware for the vs80 thats needed, more likey the drivers and patch level of the system.

The vs80 is a relatively new drive compared to 11.0 and without the patch level reasonably upto date then it just wont recognise it.

check you have this stape patch installed

this has the support for the VS80 drives and is the latest version.

download from here if you dont

You need at least this patch for the drive to work

but this has been superceded by the above

Install this patch and then do an ioscan and insf -e
