Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi,

For the past two days, i have had problems in replying to posts. The page use to return errors like not found; 401 error etc. (all dutifully recorded in Dan's problem post).

But, when i started using OPERA 5 browser,
it works like a charm! No more errors, no double refreshing, no more freezing of page and other assorted problems.

So, for folks facing similar problems, my suggestion is to try Opera (or netscape) instead of IE.

Thanks HP for forcing me try another browser and finding an alternative to IE and the moribund Netscape. ;-)

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi,

I never liked IE anyway... At my office we have to use, part our standard build I'm afraid.... At home I use Netscape... Have for years... Just seems to be a better browser!

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hello Raj,

how *big* is your "post-window"?
In Netscape 4.78 it is only 31x10 for me, IE5.5 seems a little better - but still 10 lines only :-(

Curious,

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Netscape was a good browser. But after being taken over by AOL, it seems to have lost that edge. Also many of the sites usually lock up or seem slow when accessed by Netscape, which forced me to move to IE. (Msoft trick?).

On first looks, Opera seems good. Definitely much faster than IE or Netscape. It also shows the status of the connection , when the links are accessed. So, if a page is taking long to load, you will know at which stage it is stuck, whereas in IE it simply shows the "transfering document" throughout. For eg: in Opera, whenever the
reply or post fails to load a page, i see that
it starts of with - "connecting to forums.itrc.hp.com" and then "looking up forums.itrc.hp.com" resulting in a failure.
Whereas, normally when it works, it starts
of with "request sent to forums.itrc.hp.com" and "downloading from forums.itrc.hp.com".
then (this will go to Dan's feedback post).

Woodi, the post window is 50*10 here.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hello Folks,

I've been using Mozilla 0.9.5 for windows (0.9.6 is out already). Works like a charm, however I still get the "connection refused" errors (seems to be a server problem since a telnet forums.itrc.hp.com 80 gives me the same error).

PS: The edit window is horribly small too. But that's been true for all browsers I've tested so far.

Paga

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi Raj,

I usually use IE but decided to try Netscape to see if I had better luck with the forums. I'm not. Instead of getting "page can not be displayed" by IE I'm getting "The connection was refused when attempting to contact forums.itrc.hp.com".

Got the link for where we can get Opera?

Thanks,
Darrell

What versions are you running?

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

I usually run IE 6.0 but also have the problem with IE 5.5 and Netscape 6.1. This is an intermittent problem.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi there.
Just my two cents.
I have just replied to Dan's Pls report forum issues .
These errors appear on IE as well as on Netscape, independent from the OS.
At home i use Linux with Netscape, Win2k with IE and Netscape, at the office i use NT4.0 with IE and HP-UX 11.00 with Netscape.
I had these errors everywhere.
Guys, pls place thiese things in Dan's posting.
If it does not change, just complain to your support folks at HP. I think, in this case we have to be a pain in the neck, until it is solved. We all suffer from this. We pay a lot of money for support and we have at least a right for a working solution of these problems.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Darell,

Opera can be downloaded from
the CNET download site: the link is-
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10058-102-0-1.html?tag=st.dl.10058.dir.10058-102-1

Chose Opera with JRE1.3.

It''s only for Windows platform.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Alex,

Yeah, whatever errors i noticed it is there in Dan's post and i see so many responses in that thread regarding access problems for the last one week.

Strangely, except for in the the morning, i have been able to access the site without problem.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi:

I wholly agree with Alexander. The various problems with the Forum started over a year ago. We have been chasing various manifestations ever since. There should be no reason, in my opinion, that this site shouldn't work equally well with any of the standard browsers -- IE, Netscape or Opera. While I can understand a requirement of a particular version and later, I can't accept the need for any other restrictions.

Regards!

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

whew! itrc seemed a little bit faster today than yesterday... tried downloading opera, installed. works much better than IE but still has to reload a couple of times yesterday. Today could be a great day for fellow forumers... itrc seemed to load fast, hope it stays this way

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

JRF,

Agreed about the problems in accessing this site and the need for HP to find a good fix for it.(actually the last three months have been a great improvement in this regard).

Regarding browsers, i definitely find difference in the performance of one browser over the other, everything else being the same. Afterall,it is also a piece of software which acts as an interface and a crucial one at that on how the internet is accessed. No doubt, MS came up with the great(?) strategy of bundling it with the O/S and touting it as a free product. Imagine
a market with only one model of car and people assuming that is the best one can get from a car!! That's how the browser and many of the s/w products market (especially in the PC world) is.

Re: Fix for the Reply problem and Reload problem!

Hi Raj:

I'm certainly not disputing that IE may work "better" with MS platforms, nor do I dispute that one browser may out-perform another. The position that I *am* taking is that the essential presentation should work consistently with all of the standard browsers, regardless. Things just do not work consistently, and I don't see that any of the anecdotal evidence that dozens of people have supplied, in dozens of threads, over dozens of months, consistently shows any common pattern.

With my regards!
