Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi All,

I have two R390's servers. They both have
a J3515A NIC card. You can telnet in but only
for a few minutes then you get disconnected.
There are no errors messages in syslog and
my network people tell me it's not a network
problem. The ping works for a while and then
drops. What kind of drivers should I be
using?

The networking folks tell me the switches show
no errors and the link is up the whole time.

Any clues
Laurie

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi Laurie,

Hope you are using 11.0. Look for the package J3515A in your application CD 1. Install that package and other dependencies. This should solve your problem. Also check and make sure you have the latest patch for the card and the network, telnet etc.

Hope this helps.

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi Laurie:

Have a look at 'lanadmin' for collisions and error rates. Simple type 'lanadmin' and follow the menu.

Then, using 'lanscan', get your PPA (or NM ID) and do:

# lanadmin -x

Make sure that your duplex settings and speed are the same as your switch AND that you have auto-negotiation off. Make sure that the proper settings are reflected (nailed-down!) in the appropriate /etc/rc.config.d/ file:

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

1. I have the J3515A product bundle installed
2. I have the lastest Patch Bundle installed
Sept. 2001
3. The lanadmin -x 0 is set correctly
100FD no auto
4. Here is my ioscan for lan:
lan 0 8/12/1/0 btlan4 CLAIMED INTERFACE HP
J3515A HSC 10/100base
5. my /etc/rc.config.d/hpgsc100conf is setup:
With the correct MAC address, lan0 and 100FD

My question is what are the patches I need?
Does the J3515A work with the R390 models?

Any other Clues? I've had a call open with HP
for over a week and I could use any help.

Laurie

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi Laurie,

Have your netowrk people set the port (connected to this server) on switch as fixed 100 MBPS no auto neg.

Also check whether you have this patch, PHNE_22461

Hope this helps.

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Yes we have that patch and yes the port is
set to 100MBPS.

Is the JA3515A OK with an R390?

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi Laurie:

I have had less than absoutely reliable results trying to run these cards at 100FD but have never had problems at 100HD. I would at least try this (making sure to hard-set 100HD on the switch ports as well). I would do this on one of your boxes and see if there is a difference. This is one of those times when a LAN Meter could really help.

Hope this helps, Clay
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Hi Laurie,

I think the card is okay for the model of server you have. Other than trying the solution suggested by clay, you can try replacing the cable and also the switch or the port on switch, if possible. Sometimes they are also a cause of this type of issues. Try that "auto neg off" on switch and the lan card as suggested above.

Hope this helps.

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

We finally got the problem. We have two R390's
that both got replacement J3515A cards and we
had orginally switched them, and they both
have the same MAC address.

So now we need to change on of the J3515A Mac
addresses.

Re: Flaky Telnet HPUX 11.0

Weird that they have the same mac address.

You can check in the /etc/rc.config.d/hpetherconf that you do not have anything specified for these interfaces or that they are different. This file is used to set a mac address that is different than the hardware one.
