Format hard disk on old unix box (K class)

Hi,

My company is disposing an old K260 Unix box and as such they want me to erase the data on the hard disk or better still, to re-format the hard disk before disposing.

Can anyone enlighten me with the steps/process/guides on doing this?

Thank you

Mok

If the disc isn't going to be used again you can do what we do - smack it on the side of a cabinet.

Hi Mok,

with command "mediainit" you can erase all data on your disks.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the quick response. However, juz wondering, at wat OS level shall perform the harddisk erase/format coz this is the first time I'm doing this?

Hi again Mok,

in my opinion you have to stop all applications, do vgremove of all vg except vg00 and then perform a mediainit.
For your vg00 i don't know exactly but maybe booting from cd (hp-ux) you can find some utility.

Hi Mok,

To format vg00, you will have to boot off of your OS installation CD and 'mediaint /dev/rdsk/cxtxdx'. For added security, you can 'dd' a junk file repeatedly to the raw volume.
