frecover hp-ux10.20

I'm trying to upgrade from our I-class server to a K-580. I've been having fits with the tape drive on the K-580.
I was using a HP DDS-3 C1557A auto-loader, but switched to a straight C1537A HP DDS-3. After numerous problems trying to transfer files from the I-class server to the K-580, I backed off and just tried to fbackup and frecover on the K-580 to diagnose my problem.

I ran an fbackup on the K-580 using the following command:

/etc/fbackup -vf /dev/rmt/0m -i /arch -c /usr/sysadm/tape.c

and had no errors.

I tried to restore back to the K-580 using the following command:

frecover -xvf /dev/rmt/0m and the drive just keeps blinking at me with nothing verbose on my screen.

I tried using frecover -V -f /dev/rmt/0m and I was able to read the volume header. I was also able to get a list of files on the volume (index). As soon as I tell it to recover, the drive just sits there blinking.

Can anyone offer any help??
THANKS!

Hi!
I'm affraid your used option -x is seeking
for graph-file.Better try:

#frecover -rf /dev/rmt/0m

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

Stan,

Unless I'm missing something, the x option is appropriate. From man frecover:

-x The files identified by the -i, -e, and -g options (see
below) are extracted or not extracted from the backup
media. If a file to be extracted matches a directory
whose contents have been written to the backup media, and
the -h option is not specified, the directory is
recursively extracted. The owner, modification time, and
access control list (including optional entries, unless
the -A option is specified) are recovered. If no file
argument is given (including an empty graph file), all
files on the backup media are extracted, unless the -h
option is specified.

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

the -x option assumes you are going to supply eihter a graph file, or specify the -i(nclude) or -e(xclude) path options.
You can try this, or indeed just try the -r(ecover all) option

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

I guess I'm reading it wrong then (which is entirely possible):If no file
argument is given (including an empty graph file), all
files on the backup media are extracted, unless the -h
option is specified.

Oh well - at least I learned something.

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

Hi again!
Thanks, boys - your remarks were right. So
I have just repeated commands, issued from
Linda on my mashine - it is working!
Only I have omitted "-c" option on
Linda's fbackup-row /I dont find what is it/.
So problems are anything else.
Thanks again, Stan

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

Well.. "-c" mean config-file. So what is it

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

The -c option uses the following configuration information from the tape.c file:

blocksperrecord 1024
records 32
checkpointfreq 512
readerprocesses 4
maxretries 5
retrylimit 5000000
maxvoluses 100
filesperfsm 300

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

It appears my problem may have been related to my SCSI cable. It seems I can now backup and recover ok on my K-580. Unfortunately it hasn't solved my bigger problem of being able to recover a tape from my I-class server. I get numerous read input errors at various places throughout the tape and on different tapes. The backup works fine on the I-class server. Any new ideas on this?

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

I suspect your tape drive on the I class may be out of alignment.
Get it checked out.

Re: frecover hp-ux10.20

Now I think I'm between a rock and a hard place. If I get my drive on my I-class server re-aligned, I'm afraid I won't be able to read my old tapes. Would I be better off to add another drive and keep the old "unaligned" drive until I can read and re-write my old tapes?
