Frivilous Games Request

I know this isn't exactly mission critical, but it *has* had me pulling my hair out...
I cannot get the SDL library (a linux library I know, but I need it to run Doom!) to recognise any graphics devices on my c240 11.00 with gnome desktop. I've tried various settings, but nothing seems to work: SDL fails to initialise because it fails to find any graphics device at all. Other libraries work fine (aalib for instance) and the only one which won't is SDL. Any ideas?
There's no place like $HOME.
