ftp from hpux to windows .. dir tree. .

Hey everyone .. I have looked but I cant find anything that fits my problem.One of our customers is leaving us and they want their home pages. The dir tree looks like this.

0/ C/ M/ c/ l/ v/
1/ D/ N/ d/ m/ w/

4/ F/ R/ etc/ o/ x/
5/ G/ S/ f/ p/ y/

A/ K/ a/ j/ t/
B/ L/ b/ k/ u/

And for example in the a you have everything 3 directories deep. To get to the homepage files for abnerh youh ave to go to:

/homepages/a/b/n#lsf
abnerh/

From my UX server I can ftp to their windows 2000 webserver. But I cant get any commands to ftp the whole directory tree up to the server. I started to download on my pc from the server but it went soooo slow. Overnight it only got to d. Anyone have any ideas?

tar -cvf /somedir/theirwebtree.tar /path/to/theirwebtree

ftp to.their.site.com
put /somedir/theirwebtree.tar

Have them find an tar utility to perform the xtraction. There are plenty available for Windoze.

I don't the size of the dir, but the best way would probably to winzip all his/her data into one file. Then ftp.

Same suggestion from me, but I would favor to gzip it, will be easier to extract for them (winzip)

I thought the files were on the 2000 box???

If they are on the hp box, then just tar the files up.

cd /where/directories/are
tar cvf joe_files.tar `ls`

then ftp the file.

Hi Richard,

You can tar the directory, gzip it, transfer it to the W2K box, and use winzip there. Done it lots of times.

Tar equivalent utility (standard with Windoze) is called 'pax'. 'pax -r -t [FileName]' is equivalent to 'tar -xf [FileName]. No third party tools required.
