User x is trying to ftp to server 123 from 456.
When this user ftp's to server 123 from 456 the following appears:
Password required for y.
Remember this user is logged in as x not y.

Re: ftp problems
The .netrc would look something like:
# cat .netrc
machine server456 login usery password usery_password
That would be the only thing I can think of.

Re: ftp problems
If user x will logon to that system from anohter system via telnet then this will not happen.
For example from system1
system1{sachin}% rlogin system2
Please wait...checking for disk quotas
sachin logged in on Tue Apr 2 13:16:33 CST 2002
system2{sachin}% su -
Password:
Then I login as root.
system2#
If I do ftp now
system2# ftp system1
Connected to system1.vdgc.com.
220 system1 FTP server (Version 1.7.212.2 Tue Apr 21 12:14:46 GMT 1998) ready.
Name (system1:sachin):
331 Password required for sachin.
Password:
But if I telnet to that system stright as root then it will ask password for root.
