ftpaccess 101

Hey group! I've never really had to utilize ftpaccess, and I was wondering if anyone has had sufficient expertise with it to explain it in it's non-manpage form.

It's been asked that a user be granted ftp permissions but be restricted to the following scenario.

Be able to put files in:
/filesystem/dir_a/sub_a
/filesystem/dir_b/sub_a
/filesystem/dir_c/sub_a

Be able to get & delete files in:
/filesystem/dir_a/sub_b
/filesystem/dir_b/sub_b
/filesystem/dir_c/sub_b

Not being able to do anything else in:
/filesystem/dir_d
/filesystem/dir_e
/filesystem/dir_f

or

/filesystem/dir_a/sub_g
/filesystem/dir_b/sub_h
/filesystem/dir_c/sub_i

Am I asking too much of ftpaccess or is this "doable". For some reason I'm not following along with the man page too get the jist of ftpaccess' capabilities. I'm already getting the "access restrictions apply" so I'm reading ftpaccess I'm just not understanding it's full capability.

Re: ftpaccess 101

I've read through the manpage a few times now, and while it's much more sophisticated than i.e. the one I know from where I actually use ftpaccess (free-/netbsd), I'm still afraid You're asking more than You can get out of ftpaccess.

You could consider using file/directory acl's for filling the gaps, but I'm not sure this is the path You want to go.

(in short: look at proftpd :)
yesterday I stood at the edge. Today I'm one step ahead.

Thanks Florian, I kinda read the same thing, but I wanted anothers point of view who's acutally used it more than I.

Jeff -
This may be of help. Attached is the HP docs we have used on many occasions to create and ftp only account with limited command access.

Best of luck.
