fuser does not work on NFS filesystems?

Hi HP-UX gurus,

I'm using quite alot NFS mounts here (with Sun servers and HP-UX 10.20 clients). My HP boxes are D servers, with latest NIS/NFS/disk patches. I'm using NFS v3 and statically mounted filesystems (not automounter).

The problem I have is that fuser never tells who's using the NFS mounted filesystems. If I provide the full canonical name of the filesystem (server:/mount/point) I get "could not obtain file system ID for file server:/mount/point" error message.

The biggest trouble is that a colleague told me it used to work before installing the latest patches... Of course, no mention of fuser in the Patch Database.

Anybody a clue ?

Thanks, Emmanuel

The following patch should solve your problem: PHCO_16109

Problem description:PHCO_16109:
When a file is opened via "fattach", in some cases fuser fails with the error "could not obtain file system ID for file". In this case, the file system will now be skipped.

If able, want might to swremove the patches that were recently installed and see if the problem corrects itself. If it does, place a call to HP and explain what is happening.

fuser has a lot of limitations. Although it should cope with nfs (and is supposed to), it's never been good (even back at 8.02).

I'd recommend just using lsof which is available from :-
