generating a trace for HPJmeter hangs

I am using HPJmeter 1.6 on Windows XP, using java version 1.4.0_01-b03. I am attempting to collect a trace using the options "-Xrunhprof:cpu=times,thread=y,cutoff=0,depth=12,lineno=y,format=a" but the application hangs... If I terminate the application, I get a 4 MB trace file, but I'd like to trace the entire application! I can trace smaller versions of the application without hanging so what is causing the hang?
