getting to single-user mode in unix
someone has brought me a d350 with no root password, how is it that i enter single-user mode to change the root password?

Shutdown & reboot the system:
# shutdown -r
Hit any key when the following message appears:
Booting from primary path, press any key to override
Enter: boot pri isl
Interact with ISL: Y
hpux -is
To change the password:
# passwd
# shutdown -r
Hit any key when the following message appears:
Booting from primary path, press any key to override
Enter: boot pri isl
Interact with ISL: Y
hpux -is
To change the password:
# passwd

If it has no root passwd then you don't need to boot it, all you have to do is run the command
passwd
Assuming you don't KNOW the passwd, the prior post will work.
If the system is trusted
Single user mode as above ...
cd /tcb/auth/r/
There may be another directory there under auth, but its actually intiuitive, but I don't have access.
there will be a file called root.
There is a password entry in there which you can make null.
Then run passwd.
