Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

I've got a A500 (acting as an Ignite server) with a Gigabit Ethernet & FastEthernet card connected to a Cisco 2948G. If i configure the Fast ethernet card on it's own I can Ignite boxes, ping etc.

When I configure the GE card I cannot ping anything.

lan0: flags=843
inet 172.18.3.251 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 172.18.255.255

lanadmin -x 0
Current Config = 100 Full-Duplex AUTONEG

lan6: flags=1842
inet 172.18.30.251 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 172.18.255.255

lanadmin -x 6
Speed = 1000 Full-Duplex.
Autonegotiation = On.

The Cisco switch reports both ports as 100/Full & 1000/Full respectively.

If I disable lan6 I can ping on lan0. If I disable lan0 I still cannot ping anything on lan6.

I've checked /etc/rc.config.d/netconf and all looks OK.

I've also changed cables over etc and still nothing.

Any bright ideas?

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Do you have both NICs in the same subnet?

This may be the problem.

Hope this helps!

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Initially I did but thought this might be the issue (although this is never an issue with Solaris) and changed them onto different subnets using a class B netmask.

lan0 = 172.18.3.251
lan6 = 172.18.30.250

It's been a long day & I am probably missing something simple.

FYI I've just stuck the GE onto a seperate VLAN and given it an address of 192.168.64.100 255.255.255.0 and I can't ping anything on that VLAN either! :(

Hi ,

How is your route configuration ?

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

You have both NICs on the same subnet.
netmask ffff0000 (255.255.0.0)

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Routing tables
Destination Gateway Flags Refs Interface Pmtu
localhost localhost UH 0 lo0 4136
qsignite qsignite UH 0 lan0 4136
172.18.30.251 172.18.30.251 UH 0 lan6 4136
172.18.0.0 qsignite U 2 lan0 1500
loopback localhost U 0 lo0 0
default 172.18.4.251 UG 0 lan6 0

I did it have it set to this... I remembered that the default would not work anymore as thats on a seperate vlan so I removed the default route.

Destination Gateway Flags Refs Interface Pmtu
localhost localhost UH 0 lo0 4136
qsignite qsignite UH 0 lan0 4136
172.18.30.251 172.18.30.251 UH 0 lan6 4136
172.18.0.0 qsignite U 2 lan0 1500
loopback localhost U 0 lo0 0

However as soon as I bring up the GE interface I cannot ping anything still. disable it and the FE starts to work again.

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Tim you're right but it doesn't matter if I put them on a Class-C or Class-B subnet. The GE card still won't work. It also doesn't explain why if I disable the FE card I can't ping anything from the GE card.

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Looks like it is a hardware problem. I've checked flow control settings (on both card & switch) tried a cross over between 2 systems, tried 100MB FDX etc and still the same results.

I'm also getting high number of errors in lanadmin

Re: Gigabit Ethernet Woe!

Those error stats look completely fubar - notice how they are all the same value. Something is seriously wrong with either the driver or the card. At least that is my opinion.

A nice round hex value:
(gdb) p /x 268435456 ==> $2 = 0x10000000
