Ok, I have installed the GNOME 1.2 depot that you can obtain from www.hp.com/go/gnome/ on HPUX 11.11. It is a trusted system so i cannot use the GDM login but am still using the dtlogin and i either change the dtprofile for a specific user or on one of the machines i set it up to log everyong in on GNOME. Everything works great... well almost.
The first problem that i started having is GMC would boot up at the start and would just freeze there and not do anything. However it doesn't do that for everyone, if you log in as root GMC works fine, and if i log in as a sysop account (a bit more privilages than a normal user) then it works fine, but for the normal users i have tried it hangs. However i can't figure out if it a permisions thing or something else because the sysio account i also use on a linux box and it has a .gnome directory and prefs from then linux box so could that be doing something to make it work? I checked and all of the files (pretty much) that got installed from the GNOME depot (including GMC) are owned by root and in group user. Should the group be something else? like sys?
That is the first problem i am having. The second is after i install it everyone works great for about a day. Then when i come in the next day and try to log on it gives the GNOME splash screen and then just sits at a black screen with a mouse cursor and won't do anything. I ssh in and check top and there is nothing chugging away but there is a gnome-session and a sawfish process in the process list.
Anyone have any clue what could be causing either of these two problems? I know this is a pre release of GNOME but it's worth a shot.
Thanks
-Chris

I think i have found the problem for GNOME breaking after a day.
I just realized that some of the files from the depot get installed into a directory that gets overwritten every night so that is breaking GNOME.
Anyone have any clues about the GMC problem?
thanks

						Chris,
busy yesterday .... gmc permissions look OK to me root & users so I guess this must be something else ?
Since cde is installed and this smells like a permissions problem I'd suggest running CDE's dr_dt script ..its hot on permissions ...
other things to try .... you can start gmc under CDE so maybe it might be worth tuscing the process to see where it hangs ?
Off the cuff is /tmp open to all ?
ps I've checked the internal gnome users mailing list and nobody's reported anything like this before ........
