GNOME Simple

I've installed the GNOME depot on my HPUX11.00 system but won't start.
The message is;
/sbin/init.d/gdm.rc start
gdm_config_parse: Can't find the gdm group (nobody). Aborting!

Even with a nobody group I still get the same message.

Re: GNOME Simple

hmm.. have you stopped hp-ux (cde) own display manager? guess it could be some interference with it...

Re: GNOME Simple

Yep! I just followed the Install instructions.
Closed down CDE, modified the desktop file and tried to start GNOME.

on reboot rc.log confirms that CDE server startup is skipped and that an attempt is made to start GNOME server, but the previous error is given.

Re: GNOME Simple

cat /etc/passwd

and

cat /etc/group

make sure the gdm entry is in group.

Is there any errors/warnings in the swagent.log
swinstall.log

or log files in /var/adm/sw/*.log
after install.

Later,
Bill
It works for me (tm)

Re: GNOME Simple

swagent.log shows;

chown: unknown user id gdm
chgrp: unknown group: gdm
chown: unknown group id games
What is the normal user:group for gdm?

gdm is in /etc/group as 110 but games is also 110 created by GNOME. gdm is not in /etc/passwd

Re: GNOME Simple

The install should have created both gdm user and group. /var/opt/gnome/gdm should be set to restrict access to only the gdm user. Are you in an NIS enviroment perhaps?

Re: GNOME Simple

Yes. I am running NIS.
Should I have installed GNOME on the server first?

Re: GNOME Simple

I've managed to get one installation working.
It created the correct entries in the passwd and group files.

GNOME looks pretty cool and I'm glad to see an number of good apps in there.
Presumably I could built Galeon and Elovution into this desktop!?

Re: GNOME Simple

You might have a UID/GID conflict with your NIS environment.

If the file owner/group & perms don't match Q6 of the FAQ, try changing the UID/GID of gdm in /etc/passwd and /etc/group to unique values.
