going from a 32 bit - 64 bit on a K460 running HPUX 11

What are the steps that I have to go through to go from a 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS.

Please advise...

There is a doc out there that details the steps you would need to go through. For the K boxes, ensure you have the minimum PDC firmware rev.

See the manual "Installing HP-UX 11.0 and Updating HP-UX 10.x to 11.0" and Installation notes.
Or see http://docs.hp.com/dynaweb/hpux11/hpuxen1a/@Generic__CollectionView
I've done it once and following step by step it was a smooth upgrate. I do not recall any problems.

be aware that the uname for the machine needs to be correct otherwise 64 bit will not install. If you have a machine at 11.00 already check the /etc/.supported_bits for correct naming conventions. If a lowercase k is used the system will not think it capable of being a 64 bit machine

In February I upgraded a K460 from 10.20 to 64bit 11.0 without any problems. Follow the documentation supplied by HP and as long as your networking is working correctly, everything should go smooth. I did have one small problem after I updated. My /stand/vmunix_test wasn't recognized as a kernel file. This was a problem with the /etc/magic file. I copied the /etc/magic from a system which was already running 11.0 and that cleared up the problem. Also, make sure you have all the keywords you need to unlock any products you need from the application CD's. Good luck.

Correct me if I am wrong, but when I migrated from a k460 to a N class server I found that even with 11.0 on the k460 the N would not take it. Durring the load the OS will see that the 460 processors are not 64 bit and give you the 32 bit 11.0 setup. I would say to cut to the chase and follow the 11.0 32 bit setup instructions since the OS alone will not give you any 64 bit advantages.

My understanding was that HP11.0 -32 is already installed and the upgrade to 64 is desired. Actually, it is call update not upgrade.
If the hardware permited, is not really a big deal. You have to follow instructions (the hardiest thing was to type a long, long command line for swinstall.

If you are already on 11-32bit then I would not recomment updating to 11-64bit. Tried this serveral times, it just doesnt work. Ended up reinstalling or installing from an ignite tape from a 64bit system. Had the Response centre looking into it for ages, they gave up also.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: going from a 32 bit - 64 bit on a K460 running HPUX 11

I have now upgraded 15 servers from 10.20 to 11.0 (both 32 and 64 bit as well as two servers upgraded from the 32 bit verson to the 64 bit version). I have found that the easiest way to do this is:
1. Attach an external drive for the upgrade or unmirror one of your internal drives and
use this to upgrade.
2. Create an Ignite tape with your vg00 image.
3. When loading the Ignite tape onto your drive increase /usr to 650, /var - 550 , /opt - 250-350.
4. Swremove your 10.20 applications. ( I leave the 10.20 patches and do a cleanup -i
after the upgrade is complete).
5. Upgrade your swgettools to 11.0
6. If doing a 64 bit upgrade refer to the 11.0 upgrade manual to verify hardware and firmware requirements.
7. SWINSTALL HP-UX 11.0. I have noticed that the patch PHKL_18543 takes a while
to load so get a good book to read if you are babysitting the machine.
8.The upgrade from a 32 bit to a 64 bit 11.0 is a little nastier.. If you have a HP-PB 100
Base T lan card I recommend you remove the btlan1 driver from the kernel before starting the upgrade because the compiler will crap out during the swinstall. You
should also swremove your applications and reinstall them after the 32 to 64 bit
upgrade. It will make things alot easier...
9. Remember when doing the 32 to 64 bit upgrade to specify -x reinstall=true -x reinstall_files=true.

10. After the upgrade, verify everything is OK and then mirror your external drive to your internal drives.. If everything isn't OK you can easily boot off your internal drive
back to 10.20.
