Hi Siva,

I configured Golden image setting in Ignite server. By doing this setup, we save lot of time instead of again installing OS,Application etc..,

Hi Siva,

You get the message because I am using a dummy SSL certificate for https://www.beepz.com, unless of course someone is willing to sponsor me a Versign/Thawte SSL certificate. :-)

Just click "Yes" to proceed in your IE browser, when the "Security Alert" dialog pops up.

Merijn,

I think there must be a bug in your stats script.
Moe shows 865 pts from the business forum and 691 pts in ITRC when I open the link.

Although a speedy performance, even if you consider that he is "only" in printers....

Re: greatest achievements

I have written procedures for performance measurements in HP-UX (using MeasureWare) and Informix. The HP-UX is simply running MeasureWare & looking at various ratios, not too ground breaking.

However, the Informix was in the form of a script and was written in perl. This was my first perl script I wrote (as opposed to blagging it off other people).

Re: greatest achievements

I tend to look at it not as a "single entity" achievement but rather the overall achievement that one has gained in his/her career as a sysadmin. Sure I can think of a few greatest moments, usually things that involved saving the company time and money, process improvements, etc, etc. But to me the greatest thing of all is to be able to still maintain in this challenging role, continue to embrace new skills and must important of all to love what you're doing.

Re: greatest achievements

Hi there.
we had an Oracle Financials Report running 9 hrs on a previous version.
After an upgarde this report suddenly ran for
69 (!) hrs with the same amount of data.
After shouting and screaming at Oracle
i checked the source code and gave them a few hints. Within a few days we received a totally new report module from Oracle.
That was a real good feeling.

Re: greatest achievements

Volker, it's not a bug, it's a - documented - feature :)

As I explained in my first Statistics thread, I add the point is all forums from the personal data. This is due to the format of the files when I started parsing. It's now to hard, and too tedious to change that back. Here's the text from http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x08a63a1c04ffd61190050090279cd0f9,00.html:

--8<---
One explanation in advance: these statistics add all the points of a member - for *all* groups, so some members `promote' sooner in my ystatistics than in the real HP-UX ITREC forum world. (Take care harry, only three more points to go :) It is too much work to change that now.
-->8---

I've got *very* little time to visit the Chatroom lately, so I hope Suzy will keep you busy :P) [ Steven, how's her tanktop? She promised me to organize some wet T-shirt competitions, and a Miss-ITRC contest, but since it's clear that Princess Paula is to win anyway, that was cancelled ]

One of them is to be here in the forums..... It's a pleasent feeling to be in touch lots & lots HP cats from all round the world. You post an error , say submit , u have atleast an answer. This forum is the best i have ever seen !!!, i have utilized forums many times.

Next , when i had no idea how to use ignite to increase your primary swap. I did the following

hpux -lm
lvrmboot
lvcreated all the LVs after swap starting from root to another location in the same disk. Copied the data to them. increased swap & lvcreated for root & lvlnbooted them on 16 HPUX boxes . The other way i had was to re-install HPUX on all the boxes which would have taken a day. This i did it in 4 hours

Re: greatest achievements

This year, I built a base L2000 that was designed to be an Ignite Server and an image template for two other L2000 boxes.

The installed product list includes

Oracle 8.1.7
Oracle Internet Application 1.0.2
Software AG Adabas
Software AG Natural
Software AG Predict

HP highlights
Ignite
IDS/9000
Samba(CIFS/9000)
Full boot mirroring right after the Ignite image push.
Changing the configuration files on the Oracle products to replace instance names and make them unique, the first time the database comes up after Ignite.

Data Storage on a Seagate Xiotech SAN/disk storage array.

Conversion of openspool print spooling to easyspooler from SeaySystems.

Though not in production yet, the system works. Seems someone needs to install some more disk space. I push an Ignite Imagae and an hour or so later, an L2000 system is ready to go, without any intervention from me other than keying in the print spool license key.

Even the Software AG raw disk areas are created in an Ignite post-configuration script.

I'm real proud of it and continue to tweak it and make it do more work, so I do less. Management has seen it work and is actually considering letting me handle patching and other issues on the image server and deploy the changes, kernel and all with Ignite instead of having to sit through three patch installations.

I taught.

I tried to teach (and learn from) every person I've come across in my 25 year career. Whether they be students in my sys admin classes, colleagues in these forums or the newbie operator on 3rd shift.

Call it payback to everyone who helped bring me along when I was grass green.

Fully rebuilt a complete network in 4 days, including DNS, NIS, NFS and automounting and client conversion. The site was 70 systems, 45 HP's, 5 SGI's, 8 IBM's, and 2 Sun servers.

This was 4 years ago, and I walked in blind. Day 1 was evaluation and opening access on all systems for remsh ;)

Re: greatest achievements

We had a filesystem loaded with almost 1 million small print files. According to the business community we had to keep them online "forever" and I could not archive them off to tape.

I wrote a series of scripts which took the files, in groups of 1000, and put them into composite tar files. I had the developers modify their code so that if a print file they wanted was missing it would automatically extract it from the correct tar file.

This reduced a directory with millions of files to around 1000.

Not rocket science, but it sure made the filesystem perform better.

Installed RedHat Linux at home and got addicted. This is what got me over the hump from being a Unix user to a Unix administrator. Now I'm considered the company expert on Unix.. Scary what one can learn in their basement with free software!
