Re: grep help
Michael> would you please open a new thread for this? You get better attention and are able to award points for the help given.
karthik> I've posted as a new topic.....thanks for correcting my fault....
I respectfully disagree. The solution for the 'new' problem is in this topic upon careful reading. And it was solved twice more in this forum this month alone! We don't need the clutter of a fourth treatment.
IMHO that de-values a critical forum concept, that is where folks make a serious attempt to see whether their generic problem has been solved already.
Re-posting individual problems discourages learning. Think back to school.... it is acceptable to have someone help you with your (home)work, but you can not have some do your (home)work for you.
The renewed attention is short lived.
Points Schmoints.
Regards,
Hein.

Re: grep help
to disagree with me is of course your good right. But this is actually not my idea, however I gree with it. Maybe, I was too harsh in this matter. I apologize. Your comment Points Schmoints, I dont understand the meaning of that. However I somewhat disagree on your standpoint. To me it is somewhat an intrusion, when someone disrupts the thread without asking the thread poster. In a conversation vou certainly would call that impolite, wont you?
anyway, I will see to it, that my comment wasnt perceived as offence.

your understanding would be appreciated,

Re: grep help
Nah, just poke at it. and see what happens.
> Your comment Points Schmoints, I dont understand the meaning of that.
It is meant to downplay the importance of the points, in reaction to your correct observation that if you join thread with a new (flavor of a) problem then the new writer can not assign points even if made very happy, and the original owner may rightly not be be interested in following the thread anymore.
We use the term in Bridge (cards!), there is a book with that title. In bridge you bid and your bid is supposed to indicated a clear point range to value your cards. Some folks (me!) believe the play is more important than the points and might not have the exact points suggested by a bid, but will have a good play!

As long as it is reasonably in line with the topic on hand I find it perfectly natural, and often enlighting, to get a question added. Compare with a public/open lunch table - hallway - coffeestation - bar discussion. Anywon can listen, anyone can talk, and is almost expected to chime in... as long as it is somewhat in topic.
bed time!
Cheers,
Hein.
