group name in /etc/group longer than 8 characters

group name in /etc/group longer than 8 characters

When I execute rdist and a file on the remote host has a different group name then on the local host, the group name does not change (eventhough ridst says that it is updating the file) if the group is longer than 8 characters.

Re: group name in /etc/group longer than 8 characters

Hi,

A file on a target host is updated if the size or modification time of the file differs from the master copy. For this reason, the system time should be synchronized on the systems using "ntp". "rdist" can update programs while they are being executed on the target host. The owner, group, mode, and modification time of the files on the master host are preserved on the target host, if possible.

Re: group name in /etc/group longer than 8 characters

Uday,

I'm using the "-M" option which tells rdist to update the file if the protection, owner, or group are different on the remote file. And although rdist says it's "updating the file" like it should, it actully does NOT update the group name (if the group name is longer than 8 characters). If the group name is 8 characters or shorter, rdist does update the group name properly.

Elliott,

Have you installed patch PHNE_21731? This is cumulative patch which fixes issues with many network utilities, rdist included. What you seem to be encountering is a bug. If you already have this patch installed, I would log a call with HP to report this issue. Please assign points if this post is useful to you. Thanks and happy holidays.
