Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

I would appreciate it if someone (anyone) could point me in the direction of documents for requirements, approved configurations, tips, gotchas etc.

No - But having worked in MC/SG & NBU (Netbackup), i believe this can be done easily.
make the floating IP as the host of NBU master.
keep the NBU DB in the MC/SG FS.
Move the /sbin/rc2.d/S777Netbackup start and stop to the run_cmd and halt_cmd of the control script. I think, this shd do it.
Good Luck and pl keep us informed how it goes.

I missed one thing, Ofcourse the tape devices must be same in both the systems (if it is two node) and kind of like shared tape devices through SAN. You may want to consider using the Shared storage option (SSO) from VRTS, though i do not see the need as long as the tape devices are made same in both the nodes.

Re: Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

Don't think its a good idea primarily because Netbackup is a connection based so all of the Netbackup tcp ports will be lost upon failover:

bpcd 13782
bpdbm 13721
bpjava-mavc 13722
bpjobd 13723

Media Server ports:

ascd 13702
lmfcd 13718
odld 13796
rsmd 13719
tldcd 13711
tlhcd 13717
tlmd 13716

Since every backup will have to be restarted upon failover this makes MC/SG moot.

You are correct - the tcp connections will be lost as the tape drives have to move over to another server.

Is the tcp connections kept alive in the case of Oracle sql connections ?., if one puts the Database in MC/SG managed.

Keep in mind you'll need an additional license for the failover server. EXPENSIVE !!!

Re: Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

Thanks everyone for replying. However I have subsequently found out that Netbackup in a MCSG configuration is not supported by Veritas. Also that migrating an existing Veritas Netbackup master server to a cluster config is also not supported.

Re: Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

I am very suprised about this "Not supported" statement.

Of corse they do not support the Cluster
and want to sell there Cluster Server product but this has nothing to do with Netbackup.

Tecnical I do not see major problems to put
an Netbackup Master on a SG Cluster.

Vertias talks about there succsess with interating Netbackup into HP/SG environements.
http://www.veritas.com/uk/cases/ubsag.html

And I got a paper from Vertias about
interating Netbackup in an HP/SG environement.
I can't find it a at the time but I will look
for it, if you still need it.

Re: Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

This has been set up at least one time by a HP field engineer in a consulting role with a single Master NBU server running on one of two servers in an HA Cluster.

HP Consulting would probably be able to implement the package although the staement about Veritas not supporting it might make you change your mind.

With regards to Veritas's statement about not supporting it in a SG environment, it could well be because ServiceGuard directly competes against Veritas's "First Watch" product.

Re: Has anyone put Veritas Netbackup into a MCSG package?

Hi,

Have to agree with Kent on this one. The following information comes straight from the horses mouth (so to speak), ie, Veritas.

Veritas do not support Netbackup in MCSG. They do support it in their own cluster environment (Veritas Cluster server - from memory).

As for the site where it was implemented by Veritas in MCSG, the only reason that is supported is because Veritas consultants were called in to help set it up. It is a one-off environment.

I heard soem rumours from a Veritas technical resource that they will be releasing an MCSG agent for NBu some time in Q4...

So do you make it to MC/SG ?
Do you all have good idea to implement Master server to MC/SG .

And Media server on MC/SG in Superdome.
