Having Trouble Removing Tape Drives Completely HPUX 11.0

I want to add a third party tape driver but can't get rid of the tape drives with rmsf -H . I removed both the stape and tape2 drivers and rebuilt the kernel. When I check stape and tape2 Current State and Pending State = Out. When I do an ioscan I still see the tape drives listed under stape but not Claimed. When I issue rmsf -H to their hardware paths they are still present when I do another ioscan. When the tape drives are listed this way I can't load the third party tape driver. I was some how able to get by this before but I might be missing a step.

Thanks!

Did you reboot the system ? - sometimes rmsf cannot remove the entries without bouncing the system

Also, try manually binding the new driver to the tape drive HW path

# cd /stand
# /usr/lbin/sysadm/system_prep -s system
# vi system
thirdpartydriver
driver thirdpartydriver
#

reboot

Re: Having Trouble Removing Tape Drives Completely HPUX 11.0

You also might want to rmsf the actual device files in /dev/rmt

After taking a backup, you can do this:

cd /etc
mv ioinit ioinit.backup

boot your box, you will be prompted into a sequence at the console that will re-create the drivers.

Do the first suggestion first, what I'm telling you is considerably more complex and risky.

Re: Having Trouble Removing Tape Drives Completely HPUX 11.0

I believe SEP intended to mention mv /etc/ioconfig /etc/ioconfig.BACKUP, not ioinit.

Remember, moving ioconfig and recreating new one has the potential to cause lot of problems.

The instance numbers of the HBAs could change which will result in new device files for the hard disks and thus you will end up not being able to activate the volume groups. It would involve number of vgexports and imports to get everything working back again.

Re: Having Trouble Removing Tape Drives Completely HPUX 11.0

How about trying using SAM to remove the tape you desire to remove.
SAM has got option of doing it.
