Hello Forums Community!

I am excited to say "hello" to you and everyone participating in the ITRC Forums!! I have recently replaced Laurent as the Forums operations manager, and I am looking forward to working with you to make the ITRC Forums the meeting place for IT professionals.

I am very impressed by the current interactivity happening in the Forums -- it is obvious to me that there is a high-level of trust, recognition, and information exchange that many of you find both rewarding and beneficial.

A major part of my responsibility to you will be to help ensure you are provided the best experience possible from the ITRC Forums -- any feedback is always appreciated.

Thanks for your participation, words of wisdom, and vision that are making the ITRC Forums a rewarding place for those involved.

Talk with you soon,
Dan

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Hello Dan!

Welcome to the community! Bashful, we're not as you'll see. We're full of opinions and usually you don't get the chance to ask before they're offered. I agree with you, that perhaps this openness is but one of the things that makes the ITRC such a unique place. Please join us often. You're one of us, now, for better or worse! ;-)

With warm regards, Jim.

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Dan,

Welcome to the wonderful world of the HP ITRC Forums. This is a wonderful resource that HP has developed and, as you have seen already, there are a lot of very active paticipants.

We probably are an opinionated group at times. I'm sure you have seen the two threads that Laurent started to report problems with the Forums. There is not any shyness about reporting problems and offering opinions. I admit that there are a couple of areas that are hot buttons with me as well, but we'll leave those until later. We wouldn't want to start off on the wrong foot here. ;)

Again, welcome to the forums. I am certain that you will do a great job here.

P.S. Have you thought about some type of Forums Forum at HP World to discuss the direction of the forums and some of the opinions and suggestions we may have?

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Hello Dan,

Welcome from an ITRC newbie. I've been on the forum for barely a month but I've learned a lot. It is fun and satisfying to be able to give something back to the HP community. There are a lot of great people hanging out here with a rich wealth of knowledge and experience. You have a fine opportunity here to make a good thing even better. As the others have mentioned, this group isn't shy about expressing their opinions but I am impressed at how civil everyone is here.

Welcome aboard and just remember, when the bullets start flying we'll be right behind you! :)

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Hi Dan,

welcome to the hot seat.

Unfortunately, as good as the ITRC idea is, its still not the best place to get a multitude of definitive answers from real HP experts. That mantle still belongs to dutchworks, or the HPADM mailing list.

The reasons why I think are twofold;

1. The ITRC is so slow. If youre trying to find something in a hurry its much faster to search dutchworks.nl or ask a question on their HPADM mailing list, get many more replies much faster.

2. I think the more experienced HP people out there are likely to be a bit older and thus perfer to use an old-fashioned mailing list rather than a new web based system which is much slower and more time consuming.

I think your goal should be to make the IRTC the best place for HP info. To do that you need to attract more of the experienced people from ducthworks to the ITRC and speed up the ITRC!
Maybe you should target them directly ? ask them why they perfer to answer questions on a mailing list rather than the ITRC, or maybe just get HP to close down dutckworks! (not without moving all their archives to the ITRC though first).

Cheers,

Stefan

I know that you are already hard at work to make these forums faster and more reliable.

I look forward to that day.

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Welcome Dan!

You will find it easy to get feedback from forum users. Just start a thread entitled "Forum feedback requested" and ask for people to reply with problems and suggestions. Users will be on that like a hobo on a ham sandwich.

BTW, I'm the whiney b@$%@#d that keeps bugging Mike Oravec about forum and general ITRC problems ;-)

And to Mike's credit, "Dan Dan The Forums Man" has a nice ring to it.

Cheers,
Jim

Re: Hello Forums Community!

I don't agree with you fully Stephan..
I don't think very many on the sysadmin mailing list know the hp xterms, nike disk arrays or superdome more than me... honestly.. and with a backup of HP RC engineers posting regularly to the forums (in the top 10 too) I'm sure that the answers to most questions can be found here, just as well as on the sysadmin mailing list.

Other than that, because I'm a travelling trainer, I'd much rather web based forums than having to delete a thousand server doesn't boot and spam emails a day.

I think just for it's sheer simplicity accessability and depth of knowledge that it does the job perfectly. Speed to me isn't much an issue, more of an issue to the forums is the random outages 404s hangs etc.. speed seems fine most of the time.

Now don't get me wrong, I often use the hp-ux mailing list, comp.sys groups etc.. and find they all have their +'s and -'s but by far think the forums as the first stop shop.

Added to that there are also the prizes.. (mmmmmm) that can be won here, so there's more an incentive to stick it out and share the know how.

Later,
Bill

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Hello all,

I agree with Bill. As a newbie to the HP-UX world, I need to have a quick way to find information. I like dutworks and the HPADM list a lot, but when I need to find something fast, I come here.

Now, the site is slow. And it definately has its problems (404, etc). But I like the search engine much better. I don't have to go through pages and pages of junk or irrelevant posts that are stored in the archives.

There is still plenty of room for improvement, but I think that HP has done a remarkable job on these forums. With Dan's help, I hope this site continues to improve and grow. Welcome Dan!

Best Regards,

Jared

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Wow! Thanks for the terrific response from everyone...I can already see that there will be no lack of feedback here -- which is a good thing. Regarding a Forum on Forums at HPWorld, there is an opportunity at a planned ITRC luncheon to connect with fellow Forums users. I will look into if there will be time to focus specifically on Forums. Again, thanks for the hearty welcome!

Re: Hello Forums Community!

hey Dan, another thing you'll get used to hearing is.. don't forget the points!
(except James.. he want's to get his last 8 the real way!!)

Do you think it could be possible to make the Assign Points button flashy red so people don't forget to assign them?

Re: Hello Forums Community!

Hi Dan,

Welcome aboard! I find that one of the best features of the forum is that it helps to keep my skills honed. One of the most unusual features of this forum is that the vast majority of members use their real names (or at least it appears that they do). I think that speaks well of the the openess and the honest desire to help of most members.

I think it would be a good idea for you to keep us updated on the direction of the forum (what hardware/software are we running on, descriptions of the problems found, new features to be added, etc.).

Regards, Clay

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
