HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

It all started when my super-done was running slow.

I saw alot of processes with 'ps -ef' so started killing things.

after 'kill -9 1' and that pesky process not dying I did 'init 1' and started killing more stuff.

I did notice that /usr was at 92%, so I moved /usr/lib to an external 2GB disk. About 1/2 way into the move the system just hung there.

Rebooting, I could not get a log in screen. I found some notes on booting to single user mode so that's what I did.

I could not mount any of my disks with wierd errors about libc.so.

Anyway, because init would not die with a kill -9, I renamed it to init.old.

Now I can not get the system even to boot into single user mode.

I tried to boot from net, but nothing happens. I know before the trouble started I had an internet connection.

What do I do?

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

Hi Shannon,

My guess is that your kill -9 on the init process has put it into a zombie state, which means that it's parent PID is 1. This means your init process is it's own parent, which puts it into the chicken/egg paradox loop. My suggestion is to try to contact it in the zombie state via your favorite psychic medium [mine is Miss Cleo] and tell it that it is really the child and to behave.

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

Trying to kill process 1 is like trying to kill one's parents.

Here the one about the definition of chutzpah.

A man kills his mother and father, pleads mercy on the court 'cause he's an orphan.

Check with the Mattel website. I think they may have something more suited to your skills. Look in the section titled: Fisher-Price.

As for the SuperDome, ask HP how to convert it to run Linux.

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

Got any old ignite tape handy?

Hopefully one from the machine that got nuked?

Better go look for it, because it is needed at this point.

You've left too much evidence of your killings lying around. Use a degausser to clean things up!

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

You could have saved a lot of time by just killing PID 0 =~()

I always say that my system's just fine - I don't want to swap it for anything.

Hi Shannon!

That's good! Glad to know you don't (yet) need to find a new line of work :-))

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

He now, It's a "SUPER-DONE", not a super dome. Intentionally named that way. ;)

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

Seems like your disks have become 'dirty'

A good scrub down with lots of hot soapy water should do the trick.... don't worry about the strange noises it makes, just remember to rinse throroughly after your done!

Either that or litigation with HP for not posting large messages to the front of the superdome reading 'DO NOT TERMINATE THE INIT PROCESS'

Cheers!

Hi (again) Shannon:

Which pun:

"Super-Done" == well-toasted (?)

...or...

"Super-Done" == Ya-did-a-good-job (?)

Super-Done? Was it irradiated?

Electron particle beam works best! Especially in the 100 Gigawatt range.

The Ballad of Shannon's Super-Done

Let me tell you a story about my Super-Done
Nobody else in the data center so I was free to roam!

Tall, sleek and fast; of the machines it was the master
But I just knew I could make that thing run a little faster!

I logged in as root and began to explore
What were all these processes running for?

Well I'll kill a few here and kill a few there
If something doesn't run nobody will really care.

Well the next thing I knew it started to choke
I looked at the thing and expected it to smoke!

On my screen I saw I had tried to kill init
I knew right away I was in deep, uh.., stuff!

Just start it again with an 'init -1'
And everything else will start to run.

Kill more processes! What's this? /usr?
92% full? I'll just move that loser!

Oops, it hung up. Time to reboot.
I'll login at the console again as root.

No login on the screen? Now what do I see?
Time to go ask all my friends on the ITRC!

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

I am a bit displeased with the super-done myself.

Those 875 processors only run a seti chunk in 4.5 hours.

What-the-heck??? An alpha is faster than that. An Intel 2.53 or even an AMD 2400 is faster than that also.

They don't have the I/O capacity of the super-D.

I should hope the Itanium procs are faster than that.

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

Shannon,

Have you tried cleaning your boot disk....maybe if just pull it out and simply drop it into a bucket of warm sudsy water (make sure it's distilled - wouldn't want any lime deposits from undistilled water left on drive...).
Then put your nice clean boot drive under a good heat lamp to dry thoroughly...maybe you could jump under lamp and get some early tanning rays while your waiting...
Then try and re-insert the drive and see what happens...you know it's clean now. So you should be able to rock and roll....right out the door....

Ahhhhhh - I needed this...l

Re: HELP !!!!!1111!!!!!!

The fix might take some time, so grab a cup of coffee and press that button in the front so you can access the built-in coffee holder.

First, power off the machine. You want to make sure it's really off, so push the power button rapidly on/off about 20-30 times.

You might have some dirty buffers, so clean all the boards with a good cleaner - preferably one with lemon scent so your computer room smells nice and fresh. Take a paper towel and dry them off, then take them to a nice carpeted area. These boards run on electricity, so you'll need to jump-start them with a little static charge.

After you put the boards back in (no need to remember which slots they came in - that's the beauty of plug and play architecture!), turn the system back on. If it still doesn't work, kick it a few times - computers run using bits, and sometimes these bits jiggle loose and have to be jostled back into position(by the way, this kick fix is why they call it booting up).

If it still doesn't work, hunt around and find the 3 emergency repair disks you made and put the first one into your floppy drive. If your floppy drive makes a grinding sound, it's not because it's reading data - it's because you have a hardware problem. A little WD-40 sprayed in the slot and you're all set!*

*(True story - many years ago when I was in the PC selling business, a guy returned his computer saying his floppy drive wasn't working. It kept making a "grinding sound". He tried to fix it by spraying some WD-40 into the slot, but it still made the sound.)

JP,

Now, that's what I call witty!!!! Good job!

...and the best part is you did it so fast! Posted in just over an hour from Shannon's post!

Thanks for the laugh - both of you!

That is classic and worth at least a couple hundred points all by itself. Thankyou, thankyou. I do have one question though: Where is Ellie May in all this? The blonde joke is begging!
