Help Installing HDD in HP Visualize C180

I want to install an additional hard drive in my HP-UX C180 workstation. I'm having trouble with the new HDD. When I power up the machine after installing the HDD, the ISL fails to find the hard drive. The whole system stalls at that point. If I try to manually search the bus for the new HDD, it is unable to detect it. I can, however, detect the SCSI CD-Rom drive and the externally attached SCSI tape drive. I'm using a brand new HDD which is an Ultra Wide SCSI. The existing HDD is also an Ultra Wide SCSI. I've verified that the HDD itself is working properly by installing it into a Windows NT machine. I've also tried booting the machine with just the new HDD to rule out any conflicts with the existing HDD. I've even tried various settings for the termination jumpers: term. from bus, term. to bus, no termination at all. Nothing works. I'm very distraught as to why a new HDD can't be detected no matter what I try even though the HDD itself is working fine.

The systsem was made in 1997 and no upgrades have been done since then. Is there some sort of hardware upgrade that I need to have before I install a newer HDD? Are there any patches that I need? Do I need to upgrade the kernel or something? I'm at a loss. I've listed all the specs below. If somebody knows what to do, your help will be immensely appreciated.

Specs
Existing HDD:
Seagate ST34371W Barracuda
Ultra SCSI 4.35 GB 3.5LP, 7200 rpm

New HDD:
Seagate ST39216W Barracuda
Ultra SCSI 9.2GB 3.5LP, 7200 rpm

Workstation
C180 HP Visualize PA-RISC Workstation
Product number is A4231A.
OS - HP-UX 10.20

Thanks in advance

Re: Help Installing HDD in HP Visualize C180

What is the SCSI ID on the new drive? Have you verified that you are not using a duplicate SCSI ID?

Yes. I've tried various non-conflicting SCSI ID settings. The new HDD by itself was still not detected.

The new HDD was not detected at all. With or without the existing HDD.

Re: Help Installing HDD in HP Visualize C180

Hi Ben

Ensure that the jumper termination is only set on the last drive in the chain, and that the drive you are having problems with is terminated when you are testing it by istself.

I've tried that. It will find other SCSI devices on the system but not the new HDD.

Ben

Just a thought, do you have any other devices on the SCSI chain (DVD,DAT,CD etc) if so what are the SCSI ids of them.
