HELP: Itanium RX6600 - Split 11iV2 Root Mirror and Upgrade One Side to 11iV3?

Hi all,

I have an RX6600 that has a mirrored boot volume. We need to test upgrade from 11iV2 to 11iV3. I want to split the mirror and upgrade to V3 on of the disks but be able to boot and fail back to the other disk so I am on V2 again if the upgrade does not give the expected results.

I do not quite know how to accomplish this task. I am looking for a procedure.

Thanks,

Craig

If you split the mirror, your data on this disk will be lost. split = delete.

You need to check if the disk is HW mirrored via the controller or SW mirrored via LVM.

Anyway, you should shutdown the server and remove one of the disks. The data on this disk is safe now. Reboot in "-lq" mode, correct the mirror information (vgreduce -f vg00), and proceed to upgrade (or cold install).

If you are successful, insert the disk again and set up the mirror.

If you have problems, insert the disk and boot from. Restore the mirror following the replacement procedure (handle the "old" disk like a replacement disk).

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

As usual Torsten has the slickest way. Physically removing the disk will keep you from doing a bunch of other tasks.

Remove one disk when the system is down, boot from the other, upgrade / reinstall new HPUX.

If desire to return to old config, then insert old disk and boot from it. You will have some cleanup to do as both the configs expect the root disk to be mirrored.

BTW, An ignite image and recovery works well also.

I have to also agree with Torsten and Tim. We have a 6600 using the Smart Array so mirroring is not like the PA-RISC. If you have the Smart Array configured you could pull the disk while the system is up, But I don't recommend that. Just besure to have an ignite tape and a full backup.

Sorry, there was too much deviation around.
split != delete, but reduce = delete.

Anyway, proceed as suggested.

Hope this helps!
