help on the veritas netbackup

Hello,

Currently my company would like to upgrade the backup solution from our current Veritas Netbackup Datacenter 4.5 to the latest version.

May I know what is the best choice and what are the important points I need to take note.

Please advise if possible.

Re: help on the veritas netbackup

Hi,
"best" is always an opinion, so I will not give my opinion, as it would cause a whols string of counter-posts for other products.

"Veritas 5.0 Installation Guide"
docs.hp.com/en/5991-5508/5991-5508.pdf
and
ftp://ftp.support.veritas.com/pub/support/products/
should give you a lot to read.

Have a look at the specific forum section at:

Hi,

Other commercial backup software for HP-UX:
EMC Networker
HP OpenView Data Protector
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager

Re: help on the veritas netbackup

You cannot upgrade direct to Netbackup v6.0. You would have to first upgrade to 5.1, then apply the MP4(?) patch bundle.

I do not recommend upgrading from Netbackup 5.1 to 6.0 because I have heard of systems ending up UNBOOTABLE as a result. We had a near-miss ourselves when we upgraded. The system started mis-performing in a bizarre fashion with NFS auto problems at /net. An ls -l of / would hang, so would bdf - We couldn't shutdown and I had to TOC the box and recover. Beware!

If at all possible, I recommend keeping a small system at 4.5 to use for restores and to start afresh with a clean 6.0 install, not to try to upgrade from 5.1.
