HELP! Problems Attaching SCSI DAT Drive to RP3440...

Hi,

I'm having a problem attaching an external Single Ended SCSI DDS3 Drive to an RP3440 server. The box has two internal disks and an external SCSI LVD SE connector on the back.

I shut the box down, attached the DAT drive with an ID of 7 (and I'd also tried and ID of 1) but on both occasions, the disk on the same controller (c3) disappears completely!!!

Any ideas?

Well you certainly shouldn't use an ID of 7 - thats reserved for the SCSI controller!

Are you sure there isn't something else on the bus with an id of 1?

Hi

I think you have to set a terminator setting in the External SCSI drive ...

Was there any terminator in the external scsi controller

Thanks

Re: HELP! Problems Attaching SCSI DAT Drive to RP3440...

The drive is single ended, and the SCSI connector says Internally Terminated on it. Just looked at some other rp3440's that we've got and they have DATs connected with an ID of 4, so I tried that (but the disk disappeared again). I did notice one difference between this box and another that does have a DAT connected...

The internal drives are on the same controller and in different slots on the one with the tape drive. I'm wondering if you can only attach one SCSI device to this Single ended connection, either an internal one, or something hanging off the back???

hi lee,

id 7 shouldnot be used for any scsi device as this id is reserved for the controller itself...

Hence before attaching the dat dtive , scan your scsi bus for free id's... set the free id to your dat drive...

the problem u faced both times are :

initially id 7 clashed with the controller id and the next time id 1 clashed with your drive scsi id.

Hi,

Best will be to see the free ID's available on you controller before trying connecting a new device on different ID's. On PDC prompt. Sea command will show you all devices attached with there hardware path. Last two digits shall give you the SCSI ID.

0/0/1/1.2.0 (ID 2)
0/0/1/1.4.0 (ID 4)

Apart from these ID's also exclude default 7 of controller.

Re: HELP! Problems Attaching SCSI DAT Drive to RP3440...

Thanks for the replies. I tried an ID of 7 out of desperation, just clutching at straws. I'm still a bit confused though, as the disk on this controller is on ID2 (0/1/1/1.2.0) and there are no other devices on this controller. So when I had the DAT attached initially on ID1, then later on ID4 it still made the disk disappear.

I'm wondering if this type of DAT drive is not compatible with the server? I would have thought so though as it is an LVD Single Ended drive, same as the connection on the back of the RP3440.

Oh well, I managed to acheive what I initially set out to do anyway, and that was to backup data on the server by nfs mounting a filesystem from another box with a DAT connected, and then backing up to tape from there.

Hi Lee

Check SCSI IDs of disks at IPL and thus set a different ID for DAT. Exclude SCSI ID 7

How many SCSI cards does your server have? It's not a good idea to mix discs and tape drives on the same card, as every device will be restricted to running at the speed of the slowest device. In your case, this would slow your discs down.

You can easily check how many cards you have in sam. Assuming your LVD SE card is currently unoccupied, you should be on safe ground setting the tape drive to 3.

Re: HELP! Problems Attaching SCSI DAT Drive to RP3440...

Hi,
DDS3 is SE interface, not LVD SE. You shouldn't use SE (HVD) on Rp3440.
The minimum drive supported is DAT40 (DDS4) which has LVD SE.

Re: HELP! Problems Attaching SCSI DAT Drive to RP3440...

Hi Thayanidhi,

I think your answer must be the correct one, because I shouldn't have had any problems with SCSI ID's as I had no duplicated on the controller.

This would appear to make the most sense, as it seems that all the other rp3440's we have that have tape drives attached to them use DAT40's in Storage Works 5300 enclosures. Unfortunately, we didn't have any spare DAT40's for me to use to test this.

Hopefully I'll get round to checking this out one day. Thanks for all your help guys!
