Help with ftp and strange file naming

Hi all,

A number of our users are using internet explorer to grab and dump files using ftp from our hpux server. There is a problem that they have had recently where the files are showing up in a strange format in IE. For example the file eric shows up as 8 17:14 eric. Its taking part of the time stamp for the file. I can see that when I connect via another HP server all is fine and the directories/files show up as expected. Is there anything on the unix server that needs to be configured? Is this just IE?

Re: Help with ftp and strange file naming

Hi Adam,

Try it with another win software than IE like Explorer, Core FTP... to check if this isn't a IE issue.

Best Regards,

Eric

Re: Help with ftp and strange file naming

have you tried using ux2dos or dos2ux on the files?

man ux2dos on hpux server for details.
If I can, I will!

Re: Help with ftp and strange file naming

ux2dos / dos2ux won't do anything for file nameing issues....which is what he's asking about.

so, does ftp from the command line on the the pc(s) in question generate the same issue? And what version of IE are they running?

Ha! Good one. If you think that it has
problems with a UNIX FTP server, you should
see how confused it gets with a VMS FTP
server. People who are serious about FTP do
not rely on MSIE.

The directory listings on a UNIX FTP server
contain relatively confusing and/or ambiguous
representations of date-time data (trading
hh:mm:ss for the year, and so on), so it
should not be too amazing that a Microsoft
product might have trouble with them.

You've showed us none of the directory
listings, so it's tough to say much about
them, lacking, as I am, strong psychic
powers.
