How can I upgrade a J6000 workstation that does not have a CDROM?

This j6000 workstation for reasons unknown to me doesn't have a CDROM. It is under maintenance contract, so HP will send me the media ... but then what?

Would an external CDROM drive work during the install? Or mounting the CDROM via NFS from another server?

Your advice is very appreciated.

Unless you have an Ignite server in your LAN which you can boot from, you'll just have to have a CDROM. The J6000 has an external SCSI which supports both LVD or SE SCSI, meaning you can connect an external CDROM to it for you install.

If you have any other HP-UX systems on your network with a CDROM, you can mount the CD there and for HP-UX CDs (those requiring swinstall), use swreg to register the CD across the network. Then tell swinstall on your J6000 to use the depot located on the remote server.

Hi Ricardo:

Believe it or not, I had the same problem. I ended up opening the box and using adapters to connect a DVD to the internal ultra scsi bus. Then I booted from the OS CD to load OS. It was messy, but it was the easiest option.

Hi
If you have any other HP-UX machine (with a CD) the best way is to set up an Ignite server, this is rather easy. Another possibility, if you have another J6000 with CD, move the disk you want to install on to this machine, install and then move the disk back to the original machine.
