How do I configure a Serial Mux port for a modem

I have one of those pci serial mux octopuses. The driver for it is supposed have been installed. How do I setup a given port for it to work with a modem? When I set it up for a "Terminal" connection, it seems to work replying "Connected", and loopbacks to another port confirm that. But when I set the same port up for a modem, all I can ever get is:
" Connect failed: Requested device/system name not known".
