How do i install a patch set?

I know this is probably a very basic question however I want to make sure I get all the correct switches. I

The patch bundling instructions mention
1. On the target system, run swinstall. Enter the Source Host Name.
The Source Depot Path is "/u01/oracle/install/patch/os/10gpatch/depot".

2. Further instructions are available on the swinstall man page. Type
"man swinstall".

there is no mention of switches etc.

any help would be most gratefully received

thanks

Re: How do i install a patch set?

Hi Gareth,

Once you run 'swinstall', it will bring up a TUI and it's self-explanatory. Once it is up, set|select the following

Source Depot Type: [ Network Directory/CDROM ->]
[ Source Host Name... ]

High light "[ Source Depot Path... ]" and press enter and it should show all the registered depots on that server. Select your depot and press OK and it will go back to the main window.

Here go to Actions -> Manage Patch Selection

Select "Automatically select patches for existing software on the target" and press OK. It may wait there for sometime and will go back to the main window after selecting the patches. Then do Actions -> Install .
Then it will pop u p a window and show you the status.

Depending on the patches selected, it may reboot the system. It will prompt you before it actually installs them.

You can change options in teh same window -> Options -> Change Options.

But I wouldn't suggest you to change them unless you are sure about what they do.

Re: How do i install a patch set?

I would set:

DISPLAY=

to guarantee that the text interface is the one that starts.

The only switch I would use is "-s", which lets you specify the depot path, like this:

swinstall -s /u01/oracle...depot

There are other switches that you can use, but I prefer to see the results as swinstall goes through the analysis step.
